An ecological perspective on water shedding from leaves

Anne-Kristin Lenz et al.

Summary: Water shedding from leaves is a complex process influenced by multiple factors. The drop retention angle is argued to be a more meaningful parameter for measuring the water-shedding capacity of leaves. Current understanding of the mechanics of water shedding comes from laboratory experiments, while field studies have been largely correlational. The authors highlight the importance of applying laboratory methods to real-world scenarios for a comprehensive understanding of leaf water shedding.

Leaf surface traits contributing to wettability, water interception and uptake of above-ground water sources in shrubs of Patagonian arid ecosystems

Agustin Cavallaro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated leaf wettability and other leaf traits in plant species of a Patagonian steppe and found that all species increased leaf wettability during the dry season, with most species considered highly wettable. The leaf surface had a very high capacity to store and retain water. The seasonal changes in leaf traits and the high water retention capacity of intercepted water by crowns and leaf surfaces have significant impacts on eco-hydrological processes in water-limited ecosystems.

Phenotypic plasticity and selection on leaf traits in response to snowmelt timing and summer precipitation

Jocelyn Navarro et al.

Summary: Plant traits can respond to climate change, but the plasticity of these traits can be adaptive or maladaptive. Reductions in summer precipitation lead to decreased stomatal conductance and intrinsic water-use efficiency, but increased leaf water content, while earlier snowmelt reduces soil moisture, photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance, and increases trichome density and intrinsic water-use efficiency.

Soil respiration and N-mineralization processes in the Patagonian steppe are more responsive to fertilization than to experimental precipitation increase

Luisina Carbonell-Silletta et al.

Summary: Soil respiration and N-mineralization are key processes in carbon and nitrogen cycling of terrestrial ecosystems. The effects of soil nutrient and water additions on these processes were investigated in the Patagonian steppe. Moderate increases in precipitation did not have long-term effects on soil processes, but high levels of soil nutrient input increased soil respiration and nutrient immobilization. These findings suggest that soil nutrient enrichment can strengthen the positive feedback between the carbon cycle and climate change in arid ecosystems if not compensated by higher carbon capture.

Characterization, costs, cues and future perspectives of phenotypic plasticity

Hannah M. Schneider

Summary: Plastic responses of plants are widespread, occurring in many forms and at various biological scales, and their adaptive value depends on the specific environment and interactions with other plant traits and organisms. However, the complex nature of plasticity has posed challenges in characterizing its expression, determining its adaptive value, and understanding the environmental cues that regulate it.

Plant traits are differentially linked to performance in a semiarid ecosystem

Jennifer L. Funk et al.

Summary: Trait variation plays a crucial role in plant performance under different precipitation regimes, with annual species showing a focus on resource acquisition traits and perennial species exhibiting lower trait plasticity and higher variability in trait-performance relationships.

Evidence of foliar water uptake in a conifer species

Ziqiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that foliar water uptake (FWU) occurs in semi-humid rock mountainous areas, with water absorption via leaves increasing with precipitation intensity but decreasing with soil water content (SWC). The greatest ratios of FWU were observed in treatments with SWC of 3.9-6.5%. The findings suggest that Platycladus orientalis can uptake water through both roots and leaves to alleviate drought stress effectively, providing new insights into water use patterns in trees.

Assessing the spatiotemporal dynamics of ecosystem water use efficiency across China and the response to natural and human activities

Guangchao Li et al.

Summary: Over the past 17 years, China's vegetation WUE has shown an average value of 1.08g C m-2 mm-1, with an average annual growth rate of 0.003g C m-2 mm-1 a-1. Vegetation WUE is positively correlated with temperature and precipitation in approximately 50.21% and 66.16% of the total area, respectively. Human activities and climate change have contributed 66.75% and 33.25%, respectively, to the increase in vegetation WUE in China over the same period.

Global trends in phenotypic plasticity of plants

Gisela C. Stotz et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between phenotypic plasticity and climatic variability only for plasticity in allocation, and plasticity in leaf morphology, size and physiology were positively associated with mean annual temperature. Evidence also showed that phenotypic plasticity in physiology is limited by cold stress. Overall, plant plastic responses to non-climatic factors were stronger than responses to climatic factors.

Photosynthesis research under climate change

Sajad Hussain et al.

Summary: Increasing global population and climate change uncertainties have led to a need for improved photosynthetic efficiency and crop productivity. Genetic manipulation and reducing carbon or energy losses are potential strategies, but further efforts are needed to target key photosynthetic limitations and environmental factors.
