Numerical study of the seismic retrofitting of masonry-Infilled RC frames with openings using TRM

A. Filippou Christiana et al.

Summary: This paper examines the numerical study on the use of textile reinforced mortar (TRM) for seismic retrofitting masonry-infilled RC frames with central openings, which is conducted for the first time. The study shows that TRM contributes to increasing the lateral capacity, stiffness, and dissipated energy of infilled frames with openings, providing a more ductile behavior and preventing brittle failures. Furthermore, new stiffness reduction factors for infilled frames with openings and TRM-retrofitted infilled frames are proposed.

Combining seismic retrofit with energy refurbishment for the sustainable renovation of RC buildings: a proof of concept

Alessandra Marini et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an integrated approach for the renovation of post-World War II RC buildings in urban outskirts, aiming to achieve sustainability, safety, and resilience. The approach involves enhancing energy efficiency and architectural restyling through the use of a technological double skin, supported by an independent exoskeleton. The exoskeleton can also be engineered to ensure structural safety and resilience. Life cycle thinking is applied to re-conceive traditional structural design approaches, considering safety, cost minimization, and environmental impact reduction over the building's life cycle. The selection of materials and dry technologies allows for adaptability, reparability, maintenance, and full recyclability/reuse at the end of the building's life. The intervention is carried out externally to avoid displacement of inhabitants and building downtime. The paper presents a framework for engineers, technologists, and architects to design holistic renovation interventions, requiring innovative solutions. Possible structural techniques are proposed to be combined with energy refurbishment. The effectiveness of the proposed renovation strategy is demonstrated through the case study of a reference building, highlighting the benefits of integrating structural safety measures.

Behaviour of Masonry-Infilled RC Frames Strengthened Using Textile Reinforced Mortar: An Experimental and Numerical Studies Overview

Christiana Filippou et al.

Summary: Many existing buildings in seismic prone regions were not designed according to current codes, resulting in poor performance of reinforced concrete structures and vulnerability of masonry infill walls. Various retrofitting approaches have been proposed, but this manuscript focuses on assessing the effectiveness of using TRM technique to reduce seismic vulnerability of masonry-infilled RC frames.

Innovative seismic and energy retrofitting of wall envelopes using prefabricated textile-reinforced concrete panels with an embedded capillary tube system

E. Baek et al.

Summary: This paper investigates an innovative seismic-plus-energy retrofit solution for improving the seismic performance and thermal efficiency of buildings. The proposed system consists of prefabricated textile capillary-tube panels that are mechanically connected to existing building envelopes. The study assesses the seismic behavior of the system through quasi-static tests on masonry-infilled RC frames and presents promising results from in-plane cyclic shear-compression tests on URM piers. The retrofitted specimens showed improved stiffness, strength, and displacement capacity compared to bare configurations, and the panels proved to be effective in improving overall seismic response.

Development of sandwich panels for multi-functional strengthening of RC buildings: Characterization of constituent materials and shear interaction of panel assemblies

Christoph de Sousa et al.

Summary: This study developed a multifunctional composite sandwich panel for the rehabilitation of reinforced concrete buildings, with a focus on structural, thermal, and acoustic refurbishment of building facades. The mechanical characterization tests demonstrated the viability of using Recycled Steel Fibre Reinforced micro-Concrete (RSFRC) for structural sandwich panels, while pushout and pullout tests showed the effectiveness of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) connectors in ensuring shear load transfer. Numerical modeling successfully captured the failure mechanisms at the interface between RSFRC and polystyrene, providing important insights into cohesion and friction angle between these materials.

Influence of microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (PCMs) on the properties of polymer modified cementitious repair mortar

Rogiros Illampas et al.

Summary: The study investigated the addition of microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (PCMs) into polymer modified cement mortar, finding that PCM addition decreased the mechanical properties of the composite, increased porosity, and deformation capacity. Mortars with favorable thermal characteristics were achieved at dosages <= 20%, without compromising physicomechanical behavior for repair/strengthening applications.

Innovative Method for Seismic and Energy Retrofitting of Masonry Buildings

Luca Facconi et al.

Summary: The paper discusses a retrofitting technique based on a multilayer coating for masonry buildings built in Italy in the 60s and 70s that require energy and seismic renovation. By applying this technique on the building facades, it is possible to improve the seismic and energy performances of the building, meeting structural and energy code provisions. The technique involves using a layer of Steel Fiber Reinforced Mortar combined with thermal insulation materials to create a composite package applied on the building facade, with results of seismic and thermal analyses presented to prove the effectiveness of the intervention.
