A Rayleigh model of cesium fractionation in granite-pegmatite systems

David London

Summary: The K/Cs ratios of K-feldspars from granitic pegmatites are compared to models derived from the Rayleigh equation. The trends in elemental ratios conform to Rayleigh fractionation for the crystallization of feldspars and micas from a silicate melt. The addition of an aqueous solution to the Rayleigh model predicts high and increasing K/Cs ratios of K-feldspars that are not observed in natural rock suites.

The physical and chemical evolution of magmatic fluids in near-solidus silicic magma reservoirs: Implications for the formation of pegmatites

Juliana Troch et al.

Summary: This study reviews the physical and chemical evolution of melt and MVP in near-solidus magma reservoirs and applies these findings to observations from pegmatites. The results suggest that pegmatite-like compositions require high crystallinities (>70-75 vol% crystals) in the magma reservoir and that fluid-mobile trace elements can become enriched beyond expected levels through transport of MVP from evolved mush domains. This indicates that pegmatites may be generated from pressurized, solute-rich MVP with high concentrations of dissolved silicate melt and fluid-mobile elements, rather than directly from melt.

Temporal and Petrogenetic Links Between Mesoproterozoic Alkaline and Carbonatite Magmas at Mountain Pass, California

Kathryn E. Watts et al.

Summary: Mountain Pass is the site of the most economically important rare earth element (REE) deposit in the United States. Studying the genesis of this deposit is crucial for meeting the high demand of critical minerals. By analyzing the geochronology and geochemistry of zircon crystals, this study provides constraints on the igneous underpinnings of the Mountain Pass REE deposit. The results support a model of prolonged alkaline and carbonatite magmatism over millions of years, with magma deriving from a metasomatized mantle source containing elevated REEs and other diagnostic components.

Pegmatites as geological expressions of spontaneous crustal flow localisation

A. Plunder et al.

Summary: Among the crystalline rocks in the continental crust, pegmatites stand out for their large crystals and have both aesthetic and economic value. This study presents numerical experiments to simulate the movement of pegmatite-forming melts and proposes porosity waves as a possible mechanism for rapidly extracting and transporting these melts. The results are consistent with observations of pegmatite distribution in different crustal levels, suggesting that porosity waves play a significant role in pegmatite formation.

Metasomatic High Field Strength Element, Tin, and Base Metal Enrichment Processes in Lithium Pegmatites from Southeast Ireland

David Kaeter et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the textures and geochemistry of minerals of high field strength elements (HFSEs), tin, and base metals in albite-spodumene pegmatites in Leinster, Ireland. The research infers processes for enrichment and precipitation of these metals during pegmatite crystallization, especially subsolidus processes. The findings suggest that the late-stage processes may enhance or reduce the economic potential of these mineral deposits.

Quartz chemistry of granitic pegmatites: Implications for classification, genesis and exploration

Axel Muller et al.

Summary: Analysis of quartz from different pegmatites worldwide using LA-ICP-MS revealed that the chemistry of pegmatite quartz is mainly controlled by the source rock chemistry of pegmatite melts. Chemically primitive pegmatites may be suitable for high-tech applications, while quartz with high concentrations of Li and Al may indicate economic mineralization.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of Li, Rb, Cs, W during crustal melting, showing enrichment of Li, Rb, Cs, W in the melt and Nb, Ta, W in peritectic phases. The partitioning behavior of trace elements during crustal melting is dependent on the melting reaction and partition coefficients.

Growth and textural evolution during crystallization of quartz and feldspar in hydrous, rhyolitic melt

Monika K. Rusiecka et al.

Summary: This study measured the growth rates of alkali feldspar and quartz in a felsic melt under high temperature and pressure conditions, investigating the effects of physicochemical conditions and undercooling on their growth modes. Fractal analysis was used to quantify the textural evolution of quartz and feldspar, showing how differences in growth rates may influence the formation of different types of granites.
