The largest amber-preserved flower revisited

Eva-Maria Sadowski et al.

Summary: Amber can preserve fossil flower organs for millions of years, but flower inclusions are usually small. A large flower fossil, measuring 28mm, was found in late Eocene Baltic amber, which is three times larger than most floral inclusions. Pollen analysis revealed that the fossil belongs to Symplocaceae, supporting the affinity of Baltic amber flora to present-day East and Southeast Asia's forests.

The Angiosperm Terrestrial Revolution and the origins of modern biodiversity

Michael J. Benton et al.

Summary: The explosive growth of terrestrial biodiversity occurred from 100 to 50 million years ago, closely related to innovations in flowering plant biology and evolutionary ecology. The rise of angiosperms triggered a macroecological revolution on land, driving modern biodiversity to new, high levels of long-term transition.

Novel oxygenated fossil nor-diterpenoids from Cretaceous amber (South-Western France) as potential markers from Cupressaceae and/or Cheirolepidiaceae

Noelia De Lama Valderrama et al.

Summary: Through the study of Cretaceous ambers, certain compounds have been identified as potential biomarkers for determining the botanical origins of amber. These compounds are related to specific constituents found in resins from the Cupressaceae and Araucariaceae families. A diagenetic pathway from the parent compounds to fossil terpenoids in amber has been proposed.

Widespread mineralization of soft-bodied insects in Cretaceous amber

Hui Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reports on the discovery of calcified and silicified insects in mid-Cretaceous amber from Kachin, Burma. The analysis shows that the fossils owe their preservation to multiple diagenetic mineralization processes, and that the labile tissues mainly consist of calcite, chalcedony, and quartz. The study also suggests that amber is not a closed system and that various fluids can interact with amber, affecting the preservation and morphological fidelity of its fossil inclusions.

Molecular and carbon isotope composition of hydrocarbons from ambers of the Eocene Shenbei coalfield (Liaoning Province, NE China)

Bangjun Liu et al.

Summary: Analysis of amber from the Shenbei coalfield in northeastern China provides insights into its origin and palaeobotanical associations, predominantly from gymnosperms. Carbon isotope composition comparisons reveal information about the ancient environment in which the amber formed. Variations in carbon isotope values of compounds suggest differences in amber sources.

The hyperdiverse conifer flora of the Baltic amber forest

Eva-Maria Sadowski et al.

Summary: Baltic amber is an important Cenozoic fossil Lagerstatten, containing numerous fossils including invertebrates. However, the identity of the amber-producing conifers and the specific habitat and climate conditions under which the resins were exuded are not well known. This study revises and analyzes conifer inclusions in Baltic amber, identifying five families, 17 genera, and 26 fossil species of conifers. The results reveal a hyperdiversity of conifer taxa and suggest that the Baltic amber forest grew under a warm-temperate and humid palaeoclimate.

Composition of resinites from the Eocene Geiseltal brown coal basin, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany and comparison to their possible botanical analogues

Bernd R. T. Simoneit et al.

Summary: The study focused on different types of resinites found in the former lignite pits of the Geiseltal in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The results identified conifers of the Cupressaceae family as the main botanical contributors to the paleoenvironment, while two other resinite types were suggested to originate from angiosperms. The findings provide new insights into the Eocene paleobiome and diagenetic routes of terpenoid natural products.

Elucidation of the macromolecular composition of fossil biopolymers using Py-GCxGC-TOFMS

Raman Umamaheswaran et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors compare the effectiveness of Py-GCxGC-TOFMS with conventional Py-GC-MS techniques in analyzing fossil organic materials. They find that Py-GCxGC-TOFMS offers higher compound separation, detection of more complex compounds, and is more suitable for samples with a larger variety of chemical structures and functional groups. This method provides better characterization of kerogen chemistry, aiding in assessments of hydrocarbon source properties and potentially opening up new avenues for interpretation in paleobiological studies.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of 7-p-cymenylferruginol and its diagenetic biomarkers in Cenozoic fossil plants and Mesozoic siltstones and coals using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results showed that the occurrence of these compounds in sedimentary rocks is influenced by the maturity of organic matter. The study also identified other related compounds, which are important for understanding the role of these compounds in geological processes.

The presence of 18α(H)-oleanane in Pennsylvanian and Mississippian rocks in the Anadarko Basin, Oklahoma

Paul Philp et al.

Summary: Analysis of source rock samples in the Anadarko Basin, Oklahoma, revealed the presence of a compound tentatively identified as 18 alpha(H)-oleanane, with the identity subsequently confirmed by various methods. This compound, which is typically derived from Late Cretaceous/Early Tertiary angiosperms, was found in Early Mississippian samples, suggesting a need to reconsider the timeline of plant evolution. The source of 18 alpha(H)-oleanane in this context remains unclear.

Palynomorphs in Baltic, Bitterfeld and Ukrainian ambers: a comparison

Hans Halbwachs et al.

Summary: The study examined the differences in preserved fungal spores and plant pollen in Baltic, Bitterfeld, and Ukrainian ambers, finding significant variations in spore spectra but only marginal differences in pollen spectra. The findings suggest that Ukrainian amber indicates a moist environment rich in decaying plant debris, while Bitterfeld samples contain evidence of Ilex and Baltic samples contain evidence of Juglandaceae. Overall, the pollen spectra align with earlier research on Eocene-Oligocene vegetation and climate, highlighting the diverse habitats present during those geological epochs.

Experimental induction of resins as a tool to understand variability in ambers

Leyla J. Seyfullah et al.

Summary: Experimental resin production in Araucariacean plants shed light on the natural variability of resins, showing that different resin exudation stimuli types could lead to distinct chemical characteristics in the resins derived. However, resin chemistries from both Agathis australis and Wollemia nobilis could still be distinguished regardless of the treatment, suggesting a species-specific chemical signature. Genetic variation was also found to influence resin chemistries, highlighting the need to consider natural variability when studying resin and amber chemistries in the future.
