Coherent provenance analysis of terra rossa from the northern Adriatic based on heavy mineral assemblages reveals the emerged Adriatic shelf as the main recurring source of siliciclastic material for their formation

Ivan Razum et al.

Summary: In this study, the provenance of terra rossa soils in two different regions is investigated based on heavy mineral assemblages. Results show that the allochthonous soil components originated from the submerged alluvial plain and Eocene flysch mainly from alpine material. The degree of mineral weathering indicates that the allochthonous component is a parent material of the terra rossa soils, emphasizing the recurring process of terra rossa formation in the northern Adriatic region.

Aeolian inputs and dolostone dissolution involved in soil formation in Alpine karst landscapes (Corna Bianca, Italian Alps)

Michele Eugenio D'Amico et al.

Summary: Very different soil types occur within a short distance in a karst landscape in Selvino, Italy. The presence of quartz-rich dolostone leads to the formation of localized Podzols, while other soil types include rubified horizons, non-rubified Luvisols and Cambisols, and Rendzic Leptosols/ Phaeozems. The geochemistry of these soil types has been influenced by recent aeolian additions, particularly Saharan dust.

Erosion and weathering in carbonate regions reveal climatic and tectonic drivers of carbonate landscape evolution

Richard Ott et al.

Summary: Carbonate rocks are highly reactive and their chemical reactivity affects the morphology of carbonate-dominated landscapes and their sensitivity to weathering. However, little is known about the partitioning of denudation into mechanical erosion and chemical weathering in carbonate landscapes. This study compares denudation rates derived from cosmogenic calcite-Cl-36 and weathering rates derived from stream water chemistry to gain insights into the denudation processes in carbonate landscapes.

Soil-sediment-configurations on slopes of Central and Western Crete (Greece) and their implications for late Holocene morphodynamics and pedogenesis - A conceptual approach

Fabian Kirsten et al.

Summary: Geomorphological processes and soil formation in slope positions within the Mediterranean area have long been a focus of research. However, there has been an extensive scientific debate on the dominant processes in current soil-sediment-configurations, especially in the context of intense human land use impacts. This study presents field evidence and analytical data for representative soil sediment-profiles in central and western Crete, Greece, and provides a geomorphological context for their interpretation and comparison. The results suggest a weak degree of recent pedogenesis, with discontinuities in profiles mainly caused by geomorphological processes and deposition of distinguishable parent materials.

Long-term denudation rate of karstic North Dalmatian Plain (Croatia) calculated from 36Cl cosmogenic nuclides

Kristina Krklec et al.

Summary: The development of karst landscapes is determined by the complex interactions between lithology, climate, hydrology, soil, vegetation, and tectonics. This study conducted in the North Dalmatian Plain in the Dinaric karst region found that lithology does not have a significant impact on the topography of the erosive surface. The variable denudation rates observed are attributed to local differences influenced by factors like lichens and pedogenic carbonates.

Holocene palaeoenvironmental conditions in NE Bulgaria uncovered by mineral magnetic and paleomagnetic records of an alluvial soil

Diana Jordanova et al.

Summary: This study obtained records of paleomagnetic direction and relative paleointensity to build an age model for climate change during the Holocene period in NE Bulgaria. It found an increase in flood intensities during the late Holocene and identified six major cold incidents, with the most significant one occurring 4,500 years ago. The results highlight the sensitivity of climate in SE Europe to changes in North Atlantic circulation.

Quaternary influx of proximal coarse-grained dust altered circum-Mediterranean soil productivity and impacted early human culture

Rivka Amit et al.

Summary: The majority of the Mediterranean region has thin and barren soils, likely due to long-distance transport of very fine clay dust resulting in low accumulation rates. However, in the semiarid southern Levant, the intense dust supply from nearby areas has led to thicker, more productive soils, contributing to sustainable agriculture and early human development.

Three North African dust source areas and their geochemical fingerprint

Amy M. Jewell et al.

Summary: North Africa produces more than half of the world's atmospheric dust load, impacting human health, the radiative budget, and ocean productivity. New analysis of radiogenic isotopes in sediment samples reveals three distinct preferential dust source areas. More data is needed to improve our understanding of dust-producing regions and their contributions to global export routes.

Loess landscapes of Europe-Mapping, geomorphology, and zonal differentiation

F. Lehmkuhl et al.

Summary: The article discusses three main depositional regimes for loess formation in Europe and the influences of geomorphology and paleoenvironment on Late Pleistocene loess deposition and preservation. Criteria for dividing loess regions are proposed, and a new map of aeolian sediments distribution in Europe is presented for paleoenvironmental and archaeological studies.

Anja B. Frank et al.

Summary: This study establishes the first comprehensive bioavailable Sr isotope baseline for the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece by analyzing Sr-87/Sr-86 signatures and Sr concentrations of water, plants, and soil leachates. The study also identifies the differences in bioavailable Sr isotope signatures among different lithologies in the region.
