The magmatic web beneath Hawai'i

John D. Wilding et al.

Summary: Leveraging earthquake monitoring and deep learning algorithms, we have discovered the deep magmatic architecture of the Hawaiian volcanic system, which is crucial for understanding magma transport from the upper mantle to individual volcanoes. We have identified a collection of near-horizontal sheeted structures, called a sill complex, at depths of 36 to 43 kilometers. These sills are connected to the lower depths of Kilauea's plumbing system by a seismic belt and to a shallow decollement near Mauna Loa by a column of seismicity. These findings suggest that the mantle sill complex serves as a nexus for magma transport beneath Hawai'i and indicate widespread magmatic connectivity in the volcanic system.

Carbon stable isotope constraints on CO 2 degassing models of ridge, hotspot and arc magmas

Cyril Aubaud

Summary: Carbon dioxide emissions from volcanoes are crucial in understanding the Earth system and its impact on climate. Studying the carbon concentration and stable isotope ratios in magmas can help determine the mode of degassing and apply appropriate corrections to estimate the initial CO2 content. This review emphasizes that different magmas have diverse degassing modes, and a single model cannot explain the geochemical evolution of all magmas.

Predominantly recycled carbon in Earth's upper mantle revealed by He-CO2-Ba systematics in ultradepleted ocean ridge basalts

David W. Graham et al.

Summary: Basalts erupted within intra-transform spreading centers can be valuable probes of geochemical components in Earth's upper mantle, providing constraints on the proportions of mantle carbon that are juvenile vs. tectonically recycled. Different isotopic compositions of basalts from GTF and EPR suggest they are derived from two different mantle source compositions.

Coupled dynamics and evolution of primordial and recycled heterogeneity in Earth's lower mantle

Anna Johanna Pia Guelcher et al.

Summary: By using global-scale 2D models of thermochemical mantle convection, the study investigates the evolution and mixing of recycled and primordial heterogeneity in Earth's lower mantle. The models predict various regimes of mantle evolution and heterogeneity preservation over 4.5 Gyr based on physical parameters. Results show that primordial and recycled heterogeneity can co-exist in the lower mantle of Earthlike planets.
