Fluid evolution and metallogenic mechanism of the Xianghualing skarn-type Sn deposit, South China: Evidence from petrography, fluid inclusions and trace-element composition of cassiterite

Yong-Kang Chen et al.

Summary: The Xianghualing Sn-polymetallic deposit in South China is a large skarn-type Sn deposit controlled by NE-trending faults and hosted in the contact of Middle Devonian carbonate rock and granite. It is divided into four mineralization stages, with two stages of Sn mineralization identified. The fluid properties, evolution, and formation mechanism of the deposit were studied through fluid inclusion microthermometry, Raman spectroscopy, and trace element composition analysis of cassiterite. The results indicate that the ore forming fluid mainly derived from the highly evolved granitic magma in the region, and the genesis of cassiterite is consistent with that of typical skarn-type Sn deposits.

Robust monazite U-Pb and molybdenite Re-Os ages reveal the magmatic and metallogenic history of a highly evolved granitic system in the Xianghualing deposit, South China

Qiong Wu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the magmatic-hydrothermal processes and associated mineralization of the Xianghualing deposit in southern Hunan Province, China. By employing multiple dating methods, the study establishes a precise geochronological framework for the deposit, with monazite identified as a robust tool for dating highly evolved granites. The results suggest a temporal and genetic link between the emplacement of granites and polymetallic mineralization in the region.

Tin from Uluburun shipwreck shows small-scale commodity exchange fueled continental tin supply across Late Bronze Age Eurasia

Wayne Powell et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive sourcing analysis of tin ingots from the Uluburun shipwreck, revealing the culturally diverse and multiregional nature of Eurasian tin exchange during the Late Bronze Age. The study finds that one-third of the tin ingots were sourced from Central Asia, while the remaining two-thirds were derived from the Taurus Mountains of Turkey.

Tin isotopes as geochemical tracers of ore-forming processes with Sn mineralization

Zhen-Hua Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates tin isotope fractionation and mineralization mechanisms in several tin deposits in northeast China. The results show that tin isotopes can be used as a robust tool for identifying the source of the mineralization and that liquid-vapor partitioning or fluid-rock interaction may play a significant role in tin isotope fractionation.

Trace element composition and U-Pb ages of cassiterite from the Bolivian tin belt

Laura Gemmrich et al.

Summary: The Bolivian tin belt is known for its Sn, W, Ag, and base metal deposits, with cassiterite serving as a useful geological tracer mineral. New U-Pb dating of cassiterite indicates at least two separate events of Sn mineralization in the region, triggered by major magmatic episodes and high heat flow into the crust. The composition of hydrothermal cassiterite varies based on distance to causative intrusive complexes, with potential for inclusion of critical elements like In and Ga.

Oxygen fugacity during tin ore deposition from primary fluid inclusions in cassiterite

Christian Schmidt et al.

Summary: The reconstruction of redox conditions during the formation of rocks and ore deposits remains a challenging task, but through analysis of tin ore samples from various locations, this study has revealed the oxygen fugacity conditions during tin ore formation. The results support the hypothesis that Sn(IV) prevailed over Sn(II) in the hydrothermal fluids, suggesting that redox reactions may play a smaller role than previously assumed in the formation models of hydrothermal tin deposits.

A review of the Yanshanian ore-related felsic magmatism and tectonic settings in the Nanling W-Sn and Wuyi Au-Cu metallogenic belts, Cathaysia Block, South China

Pei Ni et al.

Summary: The Nanling area in South China is known for multiple cycles of W-Sn mineralization from Neoproterozoic to Cretaceous, with Late Jurassic granites related to W-Sn mineralization. In contrast, the Wuyi area in the eastern Cathaysia Block produced volcanic-subvolcanic rocks associated with Au-Cu mineralization in the Middle-Late Jurassic. Late stage Au-Cu mineralization in the Wuyi belt is formed by remelting of metasomatized mantle wedge in a back-arc setting during the Early Cretaceous to early Late Cretaceous.

The Geochronology of Tasmanian Tin Deposits Using LA-ICP-MS U-Pb Cassiterite Dating

J. L. Denholm et al.

Summary: This study explores the connection between Tasmanian tin deposits and their potential source granites using U-Pb cassiterite dating. Tin mineralization in Tasmania occurred between 391 +/- 6.3 and 359 +/- 7.8 Ma, spanning 32 million years, and demonstrates the importance of cassiterite dating in understanding the origin of tin deposits in complex terrains.

Sn(II) chloride speciation and equilibrium Sn isotope fractionation under hydrothermal conditions: A first principles study

Tianhua Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the speciation of Sn(II) in aqueous and gaseous phases is critical for studying the transport and deposition of Sn in various geological processes. This study used first principles method to investigate the stability of stannous chloride under hydrothermal and supercritical conditions, and found that different species dominate in different phases. Additionally, modeling results suggest that significant Sn isotope variability can be produced during cassiterite precipitation in hydrothermal fluids, with temperature and Sn speciation being key factors.
