Discovery of c.577del in EPO: Investigations into endogenous EPO double-band detected in blood with SAR-PAGE

Xinmiao Zhou et al.

Summary: Recent findings of rEPO positive results in athletes' blood samples may be attributed to a novel pathway of endogenous EPO production linked to the c.577del EPO variant, with a frequency of 0.39% in the Chinese population. Mutant EPO encoded by this variant has been studied, leading to the implementation of a revised rEPO testing strategy to prevent accusations against carriers of the c.577del variant.

Detection of de-N-glycosylated EPO with SDS-PAGE: A complementary confirmation procedure for recombinant EPO in blood samples

Sen He et al.

Summary: A complementary confirmation method for rEPO in blood samples was proposed in this study, which detects the band pattern of de-N-glycosylated EPO to distinguish rEPO from VAR-EPO. Experimental results showed that this method can accurately identify the presence of rEPO without false positive or negative results in blank or spiked samples.
