Direction of dependence analysis for pre-post assessments using non-Gaussian methods: a tutorial

Tom H. Rosenstrom et al.

Summary: This study introduced a method for determining the causal direction of dependence between variables observed before and after psychotherapy, and investigated their properties through simulations. The findings suggest that changes in depressive symptoms may not solely drive changes in social and occupational functioning during psychotherapy, but instead there may be reciprocal causation or the influence of other variables.

Hierarchical models of psychopathology: empirical support, implications, and remaining issues

Benjamin B. Lahey et al.

Summary: There is an ongoing revolution in psychology and psychiatry, which proposes a dimensional approach to psychopathology rather than discrete diagnostic categories. Recent studies suggest a hierarchical organization of correlated dimensions of psychopathology, with familial influences playing a significant role. However, more research is needed to fully understand the neurobiological correlates and clinical implications of this hierarchical model.

Biopsychosocial Model Social Anxiety and Substance Use Revised

Julia D. Buckner et al.

Summary: The review evaluated the utility of a biopsychosocial model of social anxiety's relation to substance misuse and updated the model based on data from the past 5 years. Findings suggest that socially anxious individuals may use substances to manage anxiety despite some substances not directly affecting physiological responses. Other factors such as social influence, cognitive processes, and context were also identified as important in understanding substance use among socially anxious individuals. However, sociocultural factors remain understudied in this area.
