Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Histologic mimics and diagnostic pitfalls of gastrointestinal endoscopic lifting media, ORISE™ gel and Eleview®

Zachary M. Dong et al.

Summary: Synthetic lifting media such as ORISE gel and Eleview are commonly used in gastrointestinal endoscopy, with ORISE gel being histologically identified in tissue samples more frequently than Eleview. ORISE gel can mimic mucin in biopsies but does not stain for mucin, potentially causing misdiagnosis or upstaging. Eleview is not easily detectable in tissues and shows no significant pitfalls as seen with ORISE gel, with equivalent acceptance among endoscopists. In this study, Eleview is found to be preferable to ORISE gel.

Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

Assessment of submucosal distortion and mass effect seen at follow-up after colorectal EMR with ORISE (with video)

Rachel E. Lahr et al.

Summary: This study found that ORISE gel used for submucosal injection in EMR scars can cause submucosal distortion at follow-up, which should not be mistaken for tumor growth.

Endoscopic resection reduces morbidity when compared to surgery in veterans with large and complex colorectal polyps

Milan Patel et al.

Summary: This study showed high success rates of endoscopic resection in veterans with colorectal polyps >= 2 cm and >= 4 cm, with lower rates of serious complications compared to surgical resection. Choosing endoscopic resection as the initial treatment strategy reduced morbidity compared to laparoscopic surgery, especially for polyps >= 4 cm.

Summary: This study summarized the recent changing profiles of cancer burden worldwide and in China, revealing that breast cancer became the most diagnosed cancer globally in 2020. China accounted for 24% of newly diagnosed cases and 30% of cancer-related deaths worldwide in 2020, with a high cancer mortality rate.

Endoscopic Resection Before Surgery Does Not Affect the Recurrence Rate in Patients With High-Risk T1 Colorectal Cancer

Hiroyuki Takamaru et al.

Summary: This study found that there was no significant difference in recurrence rates between patients undergoing endoscopic resection before surgery and those undergoing primary surgery for high-risk T1 CRC, indicating that endoscopic resection may be acceptable for high-risk T1 CRC.
