Electrochemical characterization of nanoporous SnO2 formed by anodization on cold spray tin coating for supercapacitor application

Mehdi Zarei et al.

Summary: Tin oxide film with regular nano-channels was formed on the surface of cold sprayed tin coating by anodizing, and annealing the samples with water led to crystalline particles formation on the inner surface. The electrochemical performance of the nanoporous tin oxide film was evaluated, showing specific capacitance and enhancement of the active surface area. The investigation of orientation effect on capacitance revealed positive effects of (020) and (031) orientations but a sharp decrease in capacity for (110) and (011) orientations.

Plethora of preparatory features on single layered double hydroxide towards energy conversion process

Susanginee Nayak et al.

Summary: Sun light-driven photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting have great potential for solar to chemical energy conversion. The incorporation of solitary photoelectrodes or dispersed photocatalysts mimics visible light harvesting and facilitates the activation of redox activities by transporting charge carriers. Therefore, understanding the correlation between the intrinsic structural behavior, performance, and stability of photoelectrodes/photocatalysts is crucial. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), with their layered structure and excellent physicochemical properties, have been extensively studied as promising photocatalysts. This review summarizes a simplified synthesis strategy for fabricating solitary LDHs semiconductor photocatalysts, covering optical and morphological aspects, to enhance photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting activities. The review outlines the photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical energy conversion mechanism and highlights the current status of LDHs for practical applications through synthetic methods. Furthermore, the synthetic techniques and performance of solitary LDHs for photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting have been reviewed.

Indulgent of the physiochemical features of MgCr-LDH nanosheets towards photodegradation process of methylene blue

Susanginee Nayak et al.

Summary: The 90% delaminated MgCr-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets were prepared via a formamide-assisted co-precipitation and mild hydrothermal route for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under solar light exposure. The as-synthesized MgCr-LDH nanosheets displayed a band gap of approximately 2.63 eV and achieved 90.6% MB photodegradation under specific experimental conditions. The superior catalytic performances were attributed to the suppression of excitonic recombination, effective light harvestation properties, and the contribution of porous structural aspects, surface defect sites, and photoactive Cr3+ cations.

Development of Bioglass/PEEK Composite Coating by Cold Gas Spray for Orthopedic Implants

B. Garrido et al.

Summary: The cold gas spray (CGS) technology enables the development of biofunctional coatings composed of 45S5 and PEEK, making it an interesting material for orthopedic applications. Different mixtures of 45S5 and PEEK powders were prepared and deposited on PEEK substrates by CGS. It was found that the deposition efficiency of the coatings is affected by the granulometry and 45S5/PEEK ratio, and the presence of glass particles improves the wear resistance of the coatings.

Structural, Optical, Photoelectrochemical, and Electronic Properties of the Photocathode CuS and the Efficient CuS/CdS Heterojunction

Gulistan Y. Shaikh et al.

Summary: We report a facile synthesis of CuS and CdS nanoparticles using a cheap solution-processed chemical bath method forming heterogeneous nucleation. The optical band gap of CuS is estimated to be 2.10 eV, indicating its potential application in inexpensive photocatalysis and solar cells. The valence band and conduction band positions of CuS and CdS are evaluated using cyclic voltammetry curves. The narrow conduction and valence band offset potentials measured at the CuS/CdS heterojunction are encouraging factors for the photoelectrochemical (PEC) application. The current density vs potential plots (J-V) support the improved short-circuit current density and determined power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the CuS/CdS heterojunction.

Electrophoretic deposition of multiwalled carbon nanotubes onto porous silicon with enhanced NO2-sensing characteristics

Dali Yan et al.

Summary: The multiwalled carbon nanotubes were successfully deposited onto porous silicon to form a composite, which was then used to fabricate chemiresistive gas sensors. The sensors showed p-type semiconductor behavior at room temperature, with the sensor fabricated using a 5-minute electrophoresis time demonstrating the best NO2-sensing characteristics, including high response, fast response-recovery time, good repeatability, and selectivity toward 1 ppm NO2. The gas-sensing performance was attributed to the heterostructure effect, high specific surface area, and unblocked porous structure.

Formation of highly uniform tin oxide nanochannels by electrochemical anodization on cold sprayed tin coatings

Mehdi Zarei et al.

Summary: In this study, self-organized nanoporous tin oxide films were prepared on cold sprayed tin and tin foil through a voltage-controlled anodization method. A simple way to achieve a completely open nanoporous structure was reported. The porous structures prepared on cold sprayed tin and tin foil were found to be different, and annealing at 350 degrees Celsius was identified as the highest applicable temperature to maintain the nanoporous structure and substrate adhesion.

Water-assisted crystallization of nanoporous tin oxide formed by anodic oxidation on cold sprayed tin coating

Mehdi Zarei et al.

Summary: Nanoporous tin oxide films were formed on cold-sprayed tin coating via modified electrochemical anodization, with crystallization aided by hot water. The morphology and crystallinity of the films were investigated through XRD, FESEM, and TEM, showing that crystallized tin oxide was formed through dissolution-precipitation mechanism. The texture coefficient and degree of preferred orientation were affected by different conditions during annealing, with variations observed in different samples.

MgCr-LDH Nanoplatelets as Effective Oxidation Catalysts for Visible Light-Triggered Rhodamine B Degradation

Susanginee Nayak et al.

Summary: In this work, MgCr-(NO3-) LDH nanosheets with high purity were successfully exfoliated using a formamide method and post-hydrothermal treatment, showing red-shifted absorption bands and effective charge separation efficiency. The nanosheets exhibited superior Rhodamine B degradation efficiency and enhanced light harvestation ability, attributed to the formation of surface-active sites and the presence of active free atoms at the edges promoting easy charge separation and catalytic efficiency. Radical quenching tests revealed that h(+) and center dot OH are the major active species responsible for RhB degradation.
