The Drosophila chemokine-like Orion bridges phosphatidylserine and Draper in phagocytosis of neurons

Hui Ji et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the chemokine-like protein Orion in Drosophila can bind to phosphatidylserine (PS) exposed on the surface of degenerating neurons and mediate phagocytosis. Orion is also involved in facilitating the interaction between PS and the engulfment receptor Draper (Drpr). The dosage of Orion is a crucial determinant of the sensitivity of phagocytes to PS exposed on neurons.

Neuron-glia crosstalk in neuronal remodeling and degeneration: Neuronal signals inducing glial cell phagocytic transformation in Drosophila

Ana Boulanger et al.

Summary: Neuronal remodeling is a conserved mechanism involving interactions between neurons and glial cells to eliminate unwanted neurites and cell bodies, with glial cells playing a key role by engulfing and clearing neuronal debris through phagocytosis. The signaling pathways and mechanisms involved in this process are conserved and identified in both Drosophila and mammals.

Neuron-glia interaction in the Drosophila nervous system

Jonas Bittern et al.

Summary: Animals have the ability to move and react to external stimuli due to the intricate neuronal network and glial cells in the nervous system. Glial cells play important roles in controlling neuronal functions, metabolic support, and cell-cell interactions, which are conserved across different species and can shed light on understanding mammalian glial cells.

The roles of astrocytic phagocytosis in maintaining homeostasis of brains

Se Young Lee et al.

Summary: This article introduces the role of astrocytes in the central nervous system in phagocytizing synapses, neuronal debris, and other substances to contribute to neural circuit refinement and homeostasis. It also discusses the potential regulation of microglial phagocytosis by astrocytes through secretion of molecules, as well as the involvement of reactive astrocytes in diseased brains.
