From academia to industry: Success criteria for upscaling nanofiltration membranes for water and solvent applications

Abdelhakim El Fadil et al.

Summary: Nanofiltration (NF) is an established membrane technology for purifying water streams, and there is a growing demand for solvent recovery and recycling in industry. Solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) and solvent tolerant nanofiltration (STNF) offer economical and eco-friendly solutions, but there are challenges in bridging the gap between academic research and industrial implementation. This critical review discusses the evaluator chart, which includes various factors for assessing the industrial potential of NF and SRNF membranes, and highlights trends in SRNF research from 2015 to 2020.

Dynamic evolution of membrane biofouling in feed channels affected by spacer-membrane clearance and the induced hydrodynamic conditions

Weichen Lin et al.

Summary: The influence of feed spacer structure on biofouling development was investigated, and it was found that the spacer-membrane clearance width plays a crucial role in the biomass accumulation and channel blockage. In the early stage, biofilm attached to low-shear regions, while in the middle and late stage, narrow clearance width led to flow passage blockage and accelerated membrane biofouling. Future optimization of feed spacer design should focus on enhancing the shear stress effect and customizing spacer geometries based on specific fouling locations.

Validation and characterisation of mass transfer of 3D-CFD model for twisted feed spacer

Y. K. Chong et al.

Summary: 3D-CFD simulations are conducted on a membrane channel with different twisted feed spacer geometries. The results show that twisted spacers enhance vortex generation and reduce stagnant zones, resulting in a higher Sherwood number and lower friction factor compared to conventional ladder-type spacers. The RR-twisted spacer outperforms the LL- and LR-twisted spacer types due to the alignment of concave surfaces towards the channel center, creating stronger vortices downstream. The study also reveals that the number of twists and attack angle have an impact on the performance of the membrane channel.

Hydrodynamic effects of non-uniform feed spacer structures on energy loss and mass transfer in spiral wound module

Hui Guan et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamic effects of non-uniform feed spacer structures on energy loss and mass transfer in spiral wound reverse osmosis (RO) module were numerically simulated by the CFD method. The simulation results showed that the spacer configuration greatly affected the energy loss and mass transfer in the module. Different filament diameter ratios and spacer mesh angles were studied, and it was found that a mesh angle between 60 degrees and 120 degrees was recommended for bearable pressure drop. The feed spacer with varied cross-section has the potential to reduce the specific energy consumption.

Parametric optimization of a spiral ground heat exchanger by response surface methodology and multi-objective genetic algorithm

Qinggong Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to optimize the design and operation parameters of the horizontal spiral-coil type ground heat exchanger (HSGHE) in ground source heat pump systems. The method combines response surface methodology (RSM) and multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA). The developed models were used to determine the optimal combination of the design and operation parameters: spiral diameter of 0.4 m, pitch of 0.1 m, and fluid velocity of 0.4 m/s. The findings of this study can assist in the development of high efficiency ground heat exchangers.

Renewable energy powered membrane technology: Energy consumption analysis of ultrafiltration backwash configurations

Sheying Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy consumption of two ultrafiltration (UF) backwashing configurations in a small-scale photovoltaic-powered membrane system. The study compares the energy consumption of a bladder tank and a backwash pump powered by supercapacitors under varying solar irradiance conditions. The study also proposes a method to simulate fouling without adding foulants. The findings suggest that the bladder tank configuration has a smaller energy consumption than the backwash pump configuration, and a backwash interval of 60 minutes provides a good compromise between energy consumption and membrane fouling mitigation.

Alla Alpatova et al.

Summary: This study proposes a wetting detection method for membrane distillation (MD) using electrically-conductive coated spacers. The method was found to generate electrical current upon wetting, with significant signal amplification as the voltage increases. It provides a faster response compared to conventional methods, and allows for early indication of membrane impairment without adverse effects on MD performance.

3D printed honeycomb-shaped feed channel spacer for membrane fouling mitigation in nanofiltration

Sanghun Park et al.

Summary: The novel honeycomb-shaped spacer demonstrates superior fouling mitigation performance and permeate production compared to the standard diamond-shaped spacer, leading to improved filtration efficiency in the membrane system. This is attributed to the thinner foulant layer formed and the generation of high-magnitude turbulent kinetic energy within the spacer filaments.

Roles and performance enhancement of feed spacer in spiral wound membrane modules for water treatment: A 20-year review on research evolvement

Weichen Lin et al.

Summary: Membrane technologies, particularly in SWM modules, have been widely utilized for water treatment, wastewater reclamation, and sea-water desalination. The feed spacer in these modules plays a crucial role in promoting flow channels, enhancing mass transfer, and creating fluid mixing. However, it also leads to issues such as increased feed channel pressure drop and localized stagnant zones, which can cause membrane fouling.
