A global eddy-resolving ocean forecast system in China - LICOM Forecast System (LFS)

Hailong Liu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a global eddy-resolving forecast system LFS based on a primitive ocean general circulation model, and shows its configuration, forecast experiments, and preliminary evaluation. In short-term oceanographic forecasting, LFS demonstrates good performance overall, except for sea level anomaly, and further investigations are needed to improve its accuracy.

Evaluation of the sensitivity on mesoscale eddy associated with the sea surface height anomaly forecasting in the Kuroshio Extension

Lin Jiang et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) forecasting to the accuracy of mesoscale eddies in the Kuroshio Extension region is evaluated. Assimilating additional observations of mesoscale eddies in the sensitive area identified by the conditional non-linear optimal perturbation (CNOP) greatly improves the forecasting skill of SSHA. The study highlights the importance of targeted observations of mesoscale eddies in regions with strong velocity shear for accurate SSHA forecasts.

Ground-Space-Sky Observing System Experiment during Tropical Cyclone Mulan in August 2022

Pak-wai Chan et al.

Summary: Forecasting tropical cyclone track and intensity is challenging due to the lack of ocean observations. The meteorological authorities of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong conducted a ground-space-sky observing system experiment and collected enhanced targeted observation data. Similar observation campaigns could be conducted in other ocean basins in the future.

Identifying the sensitive areas in targeted observation for predicting the Kuroshio large meander path in a regional ocean model

Xia Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified sensitive areas for predicting the Kuroshio large meander path using the ROMS model and a conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation method. Sensitivity experiments confirmed the important effects of initial errors' positions and spatial structure on the prediction of the large meander, and targeted observation in sensitive areas significantly improved prediction skill.

Including Tides Improves Subtidal Prediction in a Region of Strong Surface and Internal Tides and Energetic Mesoscale Circulation

Colette G. Kerry et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of including tides in accurately predicting subtidal circulation in regions with strong surface and internal tides. Resolving internal tides can improve predictability by reducing errors in assimilated Sea Surface Height and subsurface observations.

Improving typhoon predictions by assimilating the retrieval of atmospheric temperature profiles from the FengYun-4A's Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS)

Jie Feng et al.

Summary: The study utilizes the Geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) on China's FengYun-4A satellite to observe the three-dimensional thermodynamic structure of typhoons in the western North Pacific Ocean. It investigates the impact of assimilating atmospheric temperature profile retrieved from GIIRS on typhoon analysis and prediction. The results show that assimilation of additional satellite retrieval improves the accuracy of typhoon track forecasts, with significant improvements beyond two days.

Optimally growing initial error for predicting the sudden shift in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current transport and its application to targeted observation

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of initial errors on the 30-day prediction of the sudden shift in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) transport through the Drake Passage (DP). The optimally growing initial errors (OGIEs) are primarily located under 2000 m in the middle DP of (57 degrees S-62 degrees S, 73 degrees W-64 degrees W). The OGIEs cause significant transport prediction errors by exciting anomalous dipolar circulations. Linear advection contributes to error vorticity evolutions, while nonlinear advection and ageostrophic divergence show damping effects. Targeted observation in the sensitive areas determined by OGIEs can effectively enhance the ACC transport predictions.

Optimal Precursors Triggering Sudden Shifts in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Transport Through Drake Passage

Li Zhou et al.

Summary: The accurate prediction of the Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) transport remains challenging due to its high nonlinearity. This study investigates the sudden shifts in ACC transport through Drake Passage (DP) and finds that the optimal precursor (OPR) at specific depths and structures in the middle DP plays a crucial role in triggering sudden reductions in transport. Baroclinic instability is identified as a dominant factor in the development of OPRs, suggesting that careful monitoring of deep-layer density perturbations in the Southern Ocean is important for short-range ACC transport prediction.

Identification of the sensitive area for targeted observation to improve vertical thermal structure prediction in summer in the Yellow Sea

Huiqin Hu et al.

Summary: The study focused on the sensitive areas for short-term prediction of vertical thermal structure in the Yellow Sea in summer, using the CNOP method and ROMS algorithm. Identified sensitive areas were related to background currents and deploying observations in these areas led to more refined predictions than correcting initial conditions in the verification area. Targeted observations in CNOP-based sensitive areas proved to be an effective method for improving short-term VTS prediction in summer in the Yellow Sea.
