Traffic noise and breeding site characteristics influencing assemblage composition of anuran species associated to roads

Summary: The development of road infrastructures leads to the loss and fragmentation of natural habitats for animals that communicate through sounds, due to landscape reconfiguration and vehicular traffic noise. We conducted a study to quantify the disturbance level in roads with different traffic intensity and evaluate the choice of reproductive sites by anuran species. Our results showed significant differences in noise variables between roads, with higher noise levels in roads with high traffic intensity. Sites with lower noise levels, less urbanization, more vegetation, greater distances and steep slopes from the roadway, and presence of rural environments had higher species richness and abundance. The structure of noise profile and its perception in reproductive sites depend on specific variables of each habitat.

Traffic noise drives an immediate increase in call pitch in an urban frog

Summary: Traffic noise causes an increase in call pitch of brown tree frogs in urban environments, even at distances of 200-300 m from the road. However, larger chorus sizes of the frogs were associated with decreased call pitch in response to traffic noise. This study demonstrates the significant impact of anthropogenic noise on urban frog populations.
