Incidence and Molecular Characterization of Carbapenemase Genes in Association with Multidrug-Resistant Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Tertiary Healthcare Facilities in Southwest Nigeria

Oluwatoyin B. Olaniran et al.

Summary: This study collected 430 isolates of multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa from seven tertiary care hospitals in Southwest Nigeria and found a high proportion of isolates carrying metallo-beta-lactamase genes and integrons, with a prominent co-occurrence of bla(VIM-5) and bla(NDM-1). The resistance of the isolates showed a gradient based on genotypic variation. These findings suggest a strong need for enhanced surveillance and antibiotic stewardship.
