Summary: Abundant high-performance organic crystals have been reported, but their brittleness restricts their applications. Some organic crystals have been designed to be deformable, but their development relies on molecular framework design. In this study, a side-chain engineering strategy is proposed to easily modulate the mechanical compliance of organic crystals. Changing the side chains subtly alters the mechanical behaviors while maintaining the unique optical functions. The potential applications of the flexible crystals as soft optical transducing media are evaluated through optical waveguides and amplified spontaneous emissions.

Summary: We have demonstrated an innovative technique to create organic 2D and 3D waveguides with unique shapes using an acicular, stimuli-responsive molecular crystal. By investigating a single-crystal using various microscopic methods, we discovered that laser-induced isomerization led to the transition of crystalline regions to an amorphous phase, enabling the engineering of 2D and 3D waveguides. These waveguides can be used as interconnection points for different optical elements, presenting broader implications in organic photonics and crystal-related photonic technologies.

Summary: In this study, we introduce visible light guiding optical fibers with underwater operational capability for subaquatic communication and sensing technologies. The fibers are composed of mechanically flexible, blue-violet fluorescent BPP crystal waveguides with high-aspect ratio, demonstrating their amphibian-like character in both ambient and underwater conditions. The high flexibility of the crystals allows for mechanical alteration of the fiber's output light direction, making them suitable for high-precision lighting and sensing applications. This development of multi-environment-compatible and mechanically flexible organic optical fibers as sensing materials has tremendous potential for short-range underwater photonic technologies.

Summary: Polymorphism is a common phenomenon in crystals, where different crystal structures of the same compound lead to significant changes in materials properties. It is difficult to control polymorphism due to the close energy levels between different polymorphic forms. Polymorphism is not only of interest to academia but also has widespread applications in materials science and pharmaceutical industries.
