Improving Quantitative EDS Chemical Analysis of Alloy Nanoparticles by PCA Denoising: Part I, Reducing Reconstruction Bias

Murilo Moreira et al.

Summary: Scanning transmission electron microscopy is a crucial tool for achieving sub-nanometric spatial resolution in nanoscience. Machine learning, particularly principal component analysis (PCA), can be used to denoise large datasets generated by this technique. In this study, the effect of PCA on quantitative chemical analysis of binary alloy nanoparticles was analyzed using experiments and simulations. The results demonstrate the potential of PCA denoising, but also highlight the need for careful analysis and design to avoid artifacts and ensure reliable quantification.

Self-frequency-conversion nanowire lasers

Ruixuan Yi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that III-V semiconductor nanowire (NW) lasers can be used for self-frequency conversion to extend their working wavelengths. Extra visible laser output can be obtained from a GaAs/In(0.16)Ga(0.84)As core/shell NW through the process of second-harmonic generation. In addition, multiple self-frequency-conversion lasing modes are observed in a larger diameter NW laser due to second-harmonic generation and sum-frequency generation.

GaAs/GaInP nanowire solar cell on Si with state-of-the-art Voc and quasi-Fermi level splitting

Capucine Tong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a core-shell GaAs/GaInP nanowire solar cell grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a patterned Si substrate, and investigates its optoelectronic properties and limitations. The results show a power conversion efficiency of almost 3.7% and an open-circuit voltage of 0.65 V, which are state-of-the-art values for a nanowire array solar cell on Si. The study also quantifies the quasi-Fermi level splitting in the nanowire array solar cell and provides insights into the main absorption and electrical losses.

Doping challenges and pathways to industrial scalability of III-V nanowire arrays

Wonjong Kim et al.

Summary: Semiconductor nanowires have been researched for many years, but commercial application faces challenges due to fabrication cost and complex structures. Doping control at the nanoscale limits their use as device components, making it a crucial missing piece for III-V NWs to become commercially viable. This paper reviews doping of III-V NW arrays grown by molecular beam epitaxy and metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy, highlighting methods and mechanisms, as well as discussing tools for investigating doping and recent advancements in reproducibility.
