Whole-body adipose tissue multi-omic analyses in sheep reveal molecular mechanisms underlying local adaptation to extreme environments

Ya-Xi Xu et al.

Summary: By studying transcriptome and lipidome profiles of adipose tissues from thin-tailed and fat-tailed sheep populations in different seasons, we identified genetic variants and functional genes related to fat-tail phenotype. These genes are involved in lipid metabolism, extracellular matrix remodeling, molecular transport, and inflammatory response, and contribute to adipocyte hyperplasia and enhanced adipose homeostasis in fat-tailed sheep. This study improves our understanding of animal adaptation to extreme environments.

Visceral and body adiposity are negatively associated with vitamin A nutritional status independently of Body Mass Index and recommended intake of vitamin A in Brazilian Women

Amanda Ribamar et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between Vitamin A (VA) nutritional status and body fat storage in Brazilian adult women. The results showed that high visceral and body adiposity were associated with compromised VA nutritional status, even among women with normal weight according to their BMI.

Mammalian adipogenesis regulator (Areg) cells use retinoic acid signalling to be non- and anti-adipogenic in age-dependent manner

Magda Zachara et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the different subpopulations of adipose stem and precursor cells (ASPCs) and focuses on the CD142(+) ASPCs, which demonstrate non-adipogenic and anti-adipogenic properties. These characteristics are age-dependent and regulated by secretory factors and the retinoic acid signaling pathway.

Neonatal vitamin A administration increases intramuscular fat by promoting angiogenesis and preadipocyte formation

Xiaoxiao Yu et al.

Summary: Vitamin A promotes beef marbling fat development by increasing intramuscular adipose progenitors without affecting overall fatness. Retinoic acid enhances capillary development and adipogenesis of stromal vascular cells, but inhibits lipid accumulation during terminal adipogenesis.

Summary: The study compared the effects of high-dose vitamin A plus E and high-dose vitamin A plus E with zinc on patients with T2DM. Results showed that the group receiving high-dose vitamin A plus E with zinc had significant improvements in blood glucose control, beta-cell function, and insulin secretion.

Summary: The discovery of leptin and adiponectin established adipose tissue as an important endocrine organ in cardiovascular health. Normal levels of adiponectin and leptin are crucial for proper cardiovascular function, while both excess and insufficient levels may contribute to cardiovascular disorders. High levels of both adiponectin and leptin are a paradoxical factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases.

Aging-dependent regulatory cells emerge in subcutaneous fat to inhibit adipogenesis

Hai P. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue mass and adiposity change throughout lifespan, with visceral adipose tissue (VAT) increasing and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) decreasing with aging. A regulatory cell population called ARCs emerges in aging SAT, expressing progenitor markers but lacking adipogenic capacity, inhibiting proliferation and differentiation of neighboring adipose precursors. Pu.1 is identified as a driving factor for ARC development, correlating with aging-associated loss of SAT.

The pesticide chlorpyrifos promotes obesity by inhibiting diet-induced thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: The commonly used pesticide chlorpyrifos reduces energy expenditure by inhibiting diet-induced thermogenesis, contributing to obesity and insulin resistance. The suppression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) and mitochondrial respiration in brown adipose tissue (BAT) by chlorpyrifos suggests its potential contribution to the obesity epidemic.
