Somatosensory Evoked Potentials Reveal Reduced Embodiment of Emotions in Autism

Martina Fanghella et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reduced sensitivity of the somatosensory system to facial emotional expressions in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The results show that ASD individuals have reduced amplitudes of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) during the emotion task, suggesting a decreased recruitment of the somatosensory system during emotion discrimination in ASD.

Differential beta desynchronisation responses to dynamic emotional facial expressions are attenuated in higher trait anxiety and autism

Chengetai Alice Charidza et al.

Summary: The study found that beta ERD differentiated happy, fearful, and sad dynamic EFEs at the central region of interest within 800-2,000 ms after onset, but not at occipital regions. Happy EFEs elicited significantly greater central beta ERD compared to fearful and sad EFEs. Differences were source-localised to the primary somatosensory cortex, indicating differential sensorimotor simulation. Individuals with higher trait anxiety and autism showed less beta ERD differentiation between happy and sad/fearful faces.

Investigating individual differences in emotion recognition ability using the ERAM test

Petri Laukka et al.

Summary: Individuals vary in emotion recognition ability, which is positively correlated with emotional understanding, empathy, and openness, and negatively correlated with alexithymia. Women have higher ERA than men, and participants with higher ERA are more accurate in their meta-cognitive judgments about their own accuracy.
