A different type of intergranular corrosion facilitated by hydrogen in austenitic stainless steel

Pei He et al.

Summary: This research investigates the distribution of hydrogen and hydrogen-facilitated intergranular corrosion (IGC) in an austenitic stainless steel. The study finds that while coherent twin boundaries sigma 3 normally exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, they become prone to IGC after hydrogen charging. The results also show that the inhomogeneous distribution of absorbed hydrogen leads to IGC at grain boundaries, regardless of whether the steel is solution-treated or sensitized. The study proposes a model to explain this distinct type of IGC induced by hydrogen.

Understanding the pitting mechanism of super ferritic stainless steel in bromide solutions: The role of Ti/Nb-Mo precipitates with a core-shell structure

Longlin Lei et al.

Summary: The core-shell structure of Ti/Nb precipitates in UNS S44660 was revealed using FIB-TEM. In bromide solution, Nb in the shell preferentially dissolves, leaving micro-crevices. The strong anodic adsorption of Br- and the large strain field in the shell promote the dissolution of residual Mo. Micro-crevices surrounding the Ti-rich nucleus expand into pits, leading to preferential pitting corrosion at Ti/Nb precipitates.

New Findings on Intergranular Corrosion Mechanism of 445J2 Ultra-Pure Ferritic Stainless Steel

Binggang Shang et al.

Summary: A criterion for characterizing the intergranular corrosion sensitivity of 445J2 ultra-pure ferritic stainless steel was established using microstructure analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The differences in the characterization results for the intergranular corrosion sensitivity of 445J2 stainless steel by EIS and the double loop-electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation test were analyzed. It was determined that the intergranular corrosion in 445J2 is due to the elastic stress field caused by the precipitated phase.

Effects of hydrogen on the crevice corrosion behaviors of duplex stainless steel 2205

Pei He et al.

Summary: The crevice corrosion behaviors of hydrogen-charged duplex stainless steel 2205 were investigated. It was found that absorbed hydrogen decreases the critical conditions of crevice corrosion and affects its stages. Microstructural analysis revealed that hydrogen-charged specimens exhibited different morphologies compared to uncharged specimens.

Inhibition effect and mechanism of tin on the active dissolution of tin-containing 430LX ferritic stainless steel

Kangkang Zheng et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments to study the corrosion inhibition mechanism of tin in alloyed ferrite stainless steel, it was found that the inhibition effect is influenced by the concentration of Sn2+ and the polarization potential. Utilizing the principle of under-potential deposition, the inhibition mechanism of tin was successfully explained and the corrosion process of tin-containing stainless steel was clearly described.

Effect of electrochemical hydrogen charging on defect structure in titanium

Qianqian Wang et al.

Summary: The influence of hydrogen on defect structure in pure titanium was investigated using X-ray diffraction and positron annihilation spectroscopy. The results showed that hydrogen damage was related to hydrogen concentration, leading to the formation of two types of titanium hydrides and the dominance of vacancy-type defects during electrochemical hydrogen charging. Additionally, Doppler broadening spectroscopy provided a new way to identify the formation of hydrides and detect the existing form of low concentration hydrogen in samples.

Corrosion Behavior of a Nickel-Free High-Nitrogen Stainless Steel with Hydrogen Charging

Yanxin Qiao et al.

Summary: The research found that hydrogen charging not only increased the passive current density of high-nitrogen stainless steel, but also increased its resistance to pitting. This was attributed to the increase in carrier density, decrease in chromium content, and decrease in the ratio of oxygen ions to hydroxide ions in the passive film.

A comparative study on the critical pitting criteria of a super ferritic stainless steel at different temperatures in chloride or bromide solution

Longlin Lei et al.

Summary: The critical pitting criteria of S44660 in chloride or bromide solution were investigated. The study found that the more aggressive Cl- does not necessarily lead to lower Eb values in all temperature ranges. The Eb-T curves revealed that the pitting behavior can be divided into transpassivation, transition, and pitting regions with temperature. Further investigations showed that the wider transition region in bromide solution is due to the weakened repassivation ability caused by the interaction between Br- and Mo, indicating that pitting is more likely to occur at lower temperatures in bromide solution.
