Influence of isothermal omega precipitation aging on deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of a β-type Ti-Nb alloy

S. Pilz et al.

Summary: This study reveals the influence of omega iso precipitates on the deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of a biomedical beta-type Ti-40Nb alloy. The results show that the fraction and size of omega iso increased with increasing aging time, leading to an increase in Young's modulus and proof stress. The active deformation mechanisms also changed with aging time, resulting in significant alterations in mechanical properties.

Micro asperity-based fretting corrosion of CoCrMo, Ti-6Al-4V, and 316L SS: Assessment of an electrochemical and micro-mechanical model

Annsley Mace et al.

Summary: The effects of potential, normal load, and cycles on volume abraded and fretting currents were studied for CoCrMo, Ti-6Al-4 V, and 316 L SS in a phosphate buffered saline solution. The tribocorroded regions were examined using microscopy and spectroscopy. Fretting currents were compared to the predictions of the Gilbert 2020 model. The currents varied as expected based on the alloy, potential, and load. The charge released decreased over time due to oxidation wear track, but it was linearly related to the volume removed. The average fretting corrosion currents during the initial 100 cycles indicated that only a small fraction (5-16%) of the wear volume was due to electrochemical processes, with the majority attributed to plastic deformation and metal wear particle generation. The highest currents occurred at the beginning and then steadily dropped to less than half of the initial value due to rapid filling of the oxide wear track.

Atomic-scale investigations of passive film formation on Ti-Nb alloys

Ihsan Caha et al.

Summary: This study extensively investigated the passive film formation mechanisms on Ti-xNb alloys using electrochemical techniques such as EIS and MS measurements, as well as XPS and TEM analysis. It was found that Ti40Nb had lower corrosion resistance due to a thinner passive film compared to commercial pure Ti and Ti12Nb. The passive film formed on Ti12Nb and Ti40Nb alloys under steady-state conditions consisted of amorphous phases of TiO, Ti2O3, TiO2, Nb2O5, and crystalline phases of TiO2 (anatase) and Nb2O5.

Corrosion and tribocorrosion behavior of equiatomic refractory medium entropy TiZr(Hf, Ta, Nb) alloys in chloride solutions

Zening Wang et al.

Summary: Equiatomic TiZr(Hf, Ta, Nb) medium entropy alloys (MEAs) were developed to enhance corrosion resistance compared to pure Ti. Nb and Ta alloying can improve the corrosion resistance by reducing defects in passive films. The thickness of oxide films on TiZr(Hf, Ta, Nb) alloys increases in the order of Hf > Zr > Ti > Nb > Ta, indicating the ability of elements to form oxides. TiZrNb alloy exhibits higher tribocorrosion rate due to severe ploughing and delamination wear.

Summary: This paper presents an approach for achieving both high strength and low elastic modulus in biomedical titanium alloys by tailoring the alloy composition. The proposed method includes controlled alloying with oxygen for high strength and tailoring the content of beta stabilizing elements for low modulus. Cathodic activation and inflammatory species are critical to simulating in vivo Ti-6Al-4V selective dissolution

Michael A. Kurtz et al.

Summary: In vivo retrievals of metallic orthopedic implants have demonstrated the selective dissolution of Ti-6Al-4V, particularly the vanadium-rich B phase. This study investigates the electrochemical mechanism behind this damage, combining cathodic activation and hydrogen peroxide to induce selective dissolution in vitro. The findings suggest that both cathodic activation and the presence of inflammatory species are necessary for the induction of selective dissolution.
