High-entropy (Y0.2 Gd0.2 Dy0.2 Er0.2 Yb0.2 )2Hf2O7 ceramic: A promising thermal barrier coating material

Longkang Cong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel high entropy hafnate (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 was synthesized and characterized for potential use as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in gas turbines. The (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 demonstrated excellent phase stability, chemical compatibility with Al2O3, and lower thermal conductivity compared to other TBC materials. These results suggest that (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 is a promising candidate for the next generation TBC materials.

Graceful behavior during CMAS corrosion of a high-entropy rare-earth zirconate for thermal barrier coating material

Tian-Zhe Tu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that HEZ ceramics show a graceful behavior to CMAS corrosion, much better than LZ ceramics. HEZ only suffered from dissolution and re-precipitation due to CMAS corrosion, while additional grain boundary corrosion existed in the LZ system. The fine-grained structure of the precipitated high-entropy apatite resulted in a reaction layer without cracks. Therefore, HEZ is a promising candidate for TBCs with extreme resistance to CMAS corrosion.

Summary: By designing and synthesizing high-entropy (La0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2Gd0.2)(2)Ce2O7, the thermal expansion property of oxides is improved and the thermal conductivity is reduced. The multicomponent material has a higher thermal expansion coefficient and prominent thermal insulation behavior, and maintains phase stability at high temperatures, making it a promising TBC material.

Reaction mechanisms of Gd2Zr2O7 in silicate melts derived from CAS

Alice Dolmaire et al.

Summary: In this study, the infiltration mechanisms of sand and ashes (CAS) in aircraft thermal barrier coatings (TBC) at high temperatures were investigated. The reactivity between the pyrochlore phase Gd2Zr2O7 (GZ) and CMAS-derived oxides was examined to understand the diffusion, stability, and role of the reaction products in the CAS-GZ system. The diffusion mechanisms of Gd+III, Si+IV, and O-II at the GZ/SiO2 interface were discussed, providing insights into the predominant formation of Gd-oxyapatites at the silica-rich interfaces and the role of Gd2Si2O7 in hindering Si+IV species diffusion, which explains the effective prevention of CMAS infiltration by GZ coatings.

Sand corrosion, thermal expansion, and ablation of medium- and high-entropy compositionally complex fluorite oxides

Andrew J. Wright et al.

Summary: The new class of CCFOs shows improved protective properties at intermediate temperatures, but also higher chemical reactivity with sand at elevated temperatures. The high-entropy oxide exhibits no grain boundary penetration at all temperatures, but significant reaction and precipitation occur. Additionally, these materials have higher thermal expansion coefficients compared to conventional materials.

High-entropy ceramics: Present status, challenges, and a look forward

Huimin Xiang et al.

Summary: High-entropy ceramics are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with diverse crystal and electronic structures, providing large space for property tuning through band structure and phonon engineering. In addition to traditional strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity, HECs exhibit new properties such as colossal dielectric constant and super ionic conductivity. Challenges in processing, characterization, and property predictions are highlighted, along with future directions for material exploration and in-depth characterization.

Single-phase duodenary high-entropy fluorite/pyrochlore oxides with an order-disorder transition

Andrew J. Wright et al.

Summary: A series of duodenary high-entropy oxides containing eleven metal cations have been investigated in this study, showing single high-entropy phases with order-disorder transitions and reduced thermal conductivity as composition changes. The study suggests a new route to tailor high-entropy ceramics by controlling cation ordering vs. disordering, with abrupt increases in Young's modulus at low mixing concentrations near endmembers.
