Effect of hierarchical precipitates on corrosion behavior of fine-grain magnesium-gadolinium-silver alloy

Bingqian Xu et al.

Summary: Hierarchical precipitates composed of various phases in a fine-grain magnesium-gadolinium-silver alloy obtained through ECAP and subsequent peak-aging process facilitate corrosion to some extent, but their spatial redistribution improves the material's corrosion resistance possibly due to the formation of a protective corrosion product film.

New insights on the different corrosion mechanisms of Mg alloys with solute-enriched stacking faults or long period stacking ordered phase

Jinshu Xie et al.

Summary: Formation of solute-enriched stacking faults (SESFs) and their transformation into long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase in Mg alloys have been achieved in this study. The role and advantages of SESFs and LPSO phase were confirmed by experimental observations. These findings are significant for the development of high-strength and anti-corrosion Mg alloys.

Enhancing corrosion resistance of hydrothermally-treated magnesium-aluminum alloys by preprocessed metallurgical microstructure

Lian Hua et al.

Summary: A facile strategy is proposed in this study to control the corrosion behavior of hydrothermally-treated magnesium-aluminum alloys, and aging treatment is attempted to modify their metallurgical microstructure. After hydrothermal treatment, both the unaged and the aged alloy have a layer of dense coating, but the aged alloy shows better corrosion resistance.

Corrosion behavior of Mg-5.7Gd-1.9Ag Mg alloy sheet

Bangjun Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion behavior of Mg-5.7Gd-1.9Ag alloy sheets in a salt solution. The results show that the rolled sheets exhibit better corrosion resistance compared to the as-cast sheets. Aging treatment decreases corrosion resistance, but it still remains higher than that of the as-cast sheets. The migration of corrosion is mainly influenced by the evolution of second phases rather than grain size and texture.

Mediating the strength, ductility and corrosion resistance of high aluminum containing magnesium alloy by engineering hierarchical precipitates

Jiapeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study successfully improves the strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance of Mg-13Al alloy by implementing a concept called hierarchical precipitate embedded fine grain microstructure. The enhancement of mechanical properties is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of fully recrystallized fine grains and hierarchical beta phase precipitates.

Evading strength-corrosion tradeoff in Mg alloys via dense ultrafine twins

Changjian Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ultrafine grained Mg alloys with dense twins exhibit high strength and reduced corrosion rate compared to conventional ultrafine grains, achieved through a carefully designed multi-directional compression treatment refining grain size down to 300nm. This technique not only decreases micro-galvanic corrosion tendency, but also completely suppresses severe localized corrosion.
