Effect of alloying element content on anaerobic microbiologically influenced corrosion sensitivity of stainless steels in enriched artificial seawater

Huihai Wan et al.

Summary: Stainless steels are vulnerable to microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). The study compared the SRB MIC behaviors of four stainless steels with different alloying element compositions. The results showed that the sequence of sessile cell formation and uniform corrosion rate was inversely proportional to the chromium (Cr) content. The stainless steel with the lowest Cr and molybdenum (Mo) contents suffered the most severe pitting corrosion.

Effect of sulfate reducing bacteria on the galvanic corrosion behavior of X52 carbon steel and 2205 stainless steel bimetallic couple

Huihai Wan et al.

Summary: The effect of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) on galvanic corrosion between 2205 SS and X52 carbon steel in enriched artificial seawater was comprehensively investigated. This study is significant for understanding microbiologically influenced corrosion of bimetallic composite pipelines. Electrochemical tests revealed that galvanic effect was higher in the SRB-containing medium compared to the sterile medium. The coupling also accelerated the corrosion of 2205 SS, resulting in a 13-fold increase in weight loss.

The corrosion of 316L stainless steel induced by methanocossus mariplaudis through indirect electron transfer in seawater

Ruizhi Hou et al.

Summary: The effect of methanogenic archaea on the corrosion behavior of 316L stainless steel under different concentrations of organic electron donor was investigated. The results showed that methanogenic archaea can utilize stainless steel as an alternative energy source and promote its corrosion under decreased acetate concentration. Severe pitting corrosion of stainless steel is caused by the secretion of redox-active substances by methanogenic archaea, which has little relationship with the biofilm formed by them.

Crevice corrosion of X80 carbon steel induced by sulfate reducing bacteria in simulated seawater

Tiansui Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, crevice corrosion of X80 carbon steel in simulated seawater with the presence of SRB was investigated using surface analysis and electrochemical measurements. It was found that the electrode inside the crevice was severely corroded, with a large amount of corrosion products accumulating along the crevice mouth. Galvanic current density measurements confirmed the presence of a galvanic effect between the carbon steel inside and outside the crevice during the corrosion process.

Effect of crevice morphology on SRB activity and steel corrosion under marine foulers

Samanbar Permeh et al.

Summary: The study found that SRB can grow within crevice environments under both soft and hard marine fouling conditions, but aeration levels and interaction with the bulk solution at crevices may affect SRB activity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy provided insights into the complex systems related to corrosion under porous and laminate crevice geometries.

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion behavior of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on steel without organic carbon source in simulated soil solution, finding that SRB can survive for a period without organic carbon but affects corrosion rates. It was also observed that the presence of dissolved oxygen (DO) influences the corrosion process.

A study of bacteria adhesion and microbial corrosion on different stainless steels in environment containing Desulfovibrio vulgaris

T. T. T. Tran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adhesion of sulfate-reducing bacteria on different stainless steels in artificial seawater, finding that the alloy elements and surface properties of stainless steels can affect bacterial attachment which subsequently influences microbial corrosion behaviors. The corrosion rate of the materials is determined by not only bacterial attachment but also the stability of the passive film, influenced by alloying elements such as Mo and Cr. Stainless steel with chromium showed high resistance to corrosion possibly due to its toxicity on bacterial attachment.

Summary: The addition of cerium over 0.18 wt.% effectively inhibits the formation of SRB biofilm on the surface of 2205-Cu-Ce DSS, significantly reducing corrosion tendency, indicating that exceeding a critical value of cerium addition can enhance the antibacterial effect of Cu-bearing 2205 DSS against SRB-induced corrosion.
