Power exhaust concepts and divertor designs for Japanese and European DEMO fusion reactors

N. Asakura et al.

Summary: Concepts for power exhaust and divertor design have been developed with high priority in the pre-conceptual design phase of the Japan-Europe broader approach DEMO design activity. Different exhaust concepts for main plasma and divertor have been proposed by Japan and Europe to address the large power exhaust and radiative cooling issues. Power exhaust simulations showed the need for a large divertor radiation fraction to reduce peak heat flux and electron and ion temperatures.

Simulation studies of divertor detachment and critical power exhaust parameters for Japanese DEMO design

N. Asakura et al.

Summary: The management of large thermal power exhausted from the confined plasma is crucial for ITER and DEMO. A conventional divertor with a closed geometry was proposed for the Japanese DEMO reactor to address this issue, and its performance was evaluated through SONIC simulation. The study demonstrated that Ar impurity seeding and radiative cooling could effectively handle the power exhaust in different operating conditions.

Effects of divertor electrical drifts on particle distribution and detachment near the divertor target plate in DIII-D

H. Q. Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the strong impact of drifts on the divertor plasma in-out asymmetry and detachment, with physical coupling between drift flow and sheath boundary conditions. Increasing density under reversed B-T conditions flattens the target temperature profile, but effective detached plasma is still difficult to achieve.

Fast deuteron diagnostics using visible light spectra of 3He produced by deuteron-deuteron reaction in deuterium plasmas

K. Kimura et al.

Summary: The fast deuteron diagnostic method based on high-resolution optical spectroscopic measurement has been developed as a powerful tool for improving diagnostic ability for similar to MeV energy deuterons. The visible light spectrum of He-3, produced by the dueteron-dueteron reaction, may be a useful tool due to its larger charge-exchange cross section. By enhancing the emissivity of the VIS spectrum of He-3 through a high-energy beam, it can be a valuable tool for MeV beam deuteron tail diagnostics.

Effect of Large-Angle Scattering between Ions and Neutral Particles on the Density Profile at the Divertor Plate

Daisuke Umezaki et al.

Summary: Better radial transport modeling of SOL/divertor plasmas is necessary to achieve quantitative agreements between experimental values and simulation results for proper prediction of future magnetic fusion devices. Various SOL/divertor codes have been developed and applied to interpretative simulations, treating radial transport as a diffusion model with uncertainties in diffusion coefficients. The simulation by SONIC showed larger ion flux towards the divertor plate than experimental values, highlighting the importance of quantitative agreement between experiments and simulations for future fusion device predictions.

Numerical Simulation Study of the Magnetic Flux Tube Expansion on the Divertor Plasma Parameters by the LINDA Code

Md Shahinul Islam et al.

Summary: The effect of magnetic flux tube expansion on divertor plasma parameters was investigated using the LINDA fluid code. The study showed that plasma density decreases and parallel velocity increases near the target plate with magnetic field expansion. Heat and particle fluxes are significantly reduced on the target plate with expansion mesh configuration, while advection becomes stronger with decreasing distance from the target plate in the case of cylindrical mesh.
