A diachronous record of metamorphism in metapelites of the Western Gneiss Region, Norway

Samantha March et al.

Summary: This study presents data from garnet-kyanite metapelites in different regions, Ulsteinvik and Fjertoft, in Norway. The research investigates their origin and evolutionary history using various methods. The results indicate that the metapelites from these two regions have different geological histories and may have formed in different tectonic settings.

High-pressure granulite facies re-equilibration and zoisite-biotite dehydration melting during decompression of an ultrahigh-pressure garnet clinopyroxenite from the island of Fjortoft, Norway

Penglei Liu et al.

Summary: A garnet clinopyroxenite from the Western Gneiss Region in Norway has undergone a complex metamorphic evolution, as demonstrated by various studies. The findings reveal the presence of ultrahigh-pressure and high-pressure granulite facies conditions during different stages of metamorphism, shedding light on the formation of mineral inclusions and the generation of melts.

In situ laser ablation Lu-Hf geochronology of garnet across the Western Gneiss Region: campaign-style dating of metamorphism

Renee Tamblyn et al.

Summary: The development of in situ laser ablation Lu-Hf geochronology has provided a rapid and direct method for dating geological processes. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of campaign-style in situ Lu-Hf geochronology in determining the metamorphic ages of garnets in the Western Gneiss Region in Norway. The results reveal a complex polymetamorphic history in the region, with some lithologies recording Caledonian ages and others preserving garnets of both Caledonian and Neoproterozoic ages.

The contribution of elastic geothermobarometry to the debate on HP versus UHP metamorphism

Mattia Gilio et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of the pressure and temperature (P-T) histories of eclogite facies rocks is crucial for understanding subduction zone processes, with methods like elastic geobarometry providing constraints and aiding in interpreting geophysical images of present-day converging plates. These methods are particularly useful in ultra high pressure (UHP) metamorphic terranes where conventional equilibrium geothermobarometers face challenges.

Garnet, zircon, and monazite age and REE signatures in (ultra)high-temperature and high-pressure rocks: Examples from the Caledonides and the Pamir

Lorraine Tual et al.

Summary: This article investigates the REE systematics in high-grade rocks and explores the chemical equilibrium between garnet and accessory minerals under different conditions. The study finds that co-genetic garnet and accessory minerals can achieve REE equilibrium during growth, but the age and compositional record of co-genetic accessory minerals are distinctly different between different cases. The findings provide an improved framework for the reliable identification of accessory minerals that equilibrated with garnet.

Resolving mid- to upper-crustal exhumation through apatite petrochronology and thermochronology

Gilby Jepson et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of various dating methods and geochemical analyses in different tectonic domains to understand the cooling history and structural information of rocks in the Cordilleran orogenic systems. The comparisons of geochemical data provide insights into the formation and alteration history of apatite, as well as the cooling processes and structural evolution of the rocks. The findings demonstrate the potential of combined dating and geochemical approaches for new applications in thermochronology.

Diachronous collision in the Seve Nappe Complex: Evidence from Lu-Hf geochronology of eclogites (Norrbotten, North Sweden)

Kathrin Fassmer et al.

Summary: The collision of Baltica and Laurentia during the Caledonian Orogeny around 400-420 Ma is recorded in the Seve Nappe Complex in Sweden. Eclogites found in the Vaimok and Tsakkok lenses represent rocks from the Baltican continental margin and former oceanic basalts associated with calcschists, possibly representing the ocean-continent transition between Baltica and Iapetus. The ages of eclogites from the Vaimok and Tsakkok lenses were determined to be around 480-488 Ma, suggesting different tectonic events in the Seve Nappe Complex in Jamtland and Norrbotten.

In-situ Lu-Hf geochronology of garnet, apatite and xenotime by LA ICP MS/MS

Alexander Simpson et al.

Summary: Lu-Hf geochronology is a powerful method for constraining the temporal evolution of geological systems, with traditional methods requiring time-consuming chemical separations and potentially losing the textural context of analysed minerals. In contrast, the in-situ approach offers rapid analysis with high spatial resolution, but is hindered by isobaric interferences of Yb-176 and Lu-176 on Hf-176.
