Resetting of zircon inclusions in garnet: Implications for elastic thermobarometry

Nicola Campomenosi et al.

Summary: Elastic thermobarometry is commonly used for back-calculating pressure and temperature conditions of inclusion entrapment, assuming that the host-inclusion rheology is purely elastic. However, our study shows that zircon-in-garnet systems exhibit both elastic and non-elastic behavior, with stresses being reset during heating and cooling processes. This indicates the importance of considering the exhumation P-T path when using elastic thermobarometry for accurate results.

Garnet EoS: a critical review and synthesis

Ross J. Angel et al.

Summary: This study re-evaluated the volume and elasticity data of garnet end-members and determined the parameters of EOS to describe their compressibility and PVT behavior. The new EOS model showed significant improvement in predicting the properties of different garnets compared to previous models.

The contribution of elastic geothermobarometry to the debate on HP versus UHP metamorphism

Mattia Gilio et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of the pressure and temperature (P-T) histories of eclogite facies rocks is crucial for understanding subduction zone processes, with methods like elastic geobarometry providing constraints and aiding in interpreting geophysical images of present-day converging plates. These methods are particularly useful in ultra high pressure (UHP) metamorphic terranes where conventional equilibrium geothermobarometers face challenges.

The role of symmetry-breaking strains on quartz inclusions in anisotropic hosts: Implications for Raman elastic geobarometry

M. Murri et al.

Summary: Raman elastic geobarometry is a method to determine the strains on a mineral inclusion using Raman spectroscopy, and calculate the pressure and temperature conditions of entrapment. When the host-inclusion system is anisotropic, the external strain field imposed by the host can break the symmetry of the inclusion and modify the phonon modes.

Elastic geobarometry: How to work with residual inclusion strains and pressures

Mattia Gilio et al.

Summary: This paper discusses misconceptions of some general concepts underlying elastic geobarometry, focusing on the difference between various approaches to retrieve residual pressures and strains from Raman measurements of inclusions. General guidelines on how to deal with inclusion strain, measurements, inclusion pressure, and their uncertainties are provided.

Elastic Geobarometry for Anisotropic Inclusions in Anisotropic Host Minerals: Quartz-in-Zircon

Joseph P. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: A new elastic model taking into account anisotropic elastic properties and relative crystallographic orientation (RCO) of a host-inclusion system has been developed for elastic thermobarometry. Results suggest that this anisotropic model is more suitable for determining inclusion pressures and has better applicability in elastic thermobarometry compared to isotropic models.
