North American Contact Dermatitis Group Patch Test Results: 2019-2020

Joel G. DeKoven et al.

Summary: This study documents the patch testing results of the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) from 2019 to 2020. Among 4121 tested patients, 69.7% had at least 1 positive/allergic patch test reaction and 51.2% were diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The most common positive allergens were nickel, methylisothiazolinone (MI), fragrance mix (FM) I, hydroperoxides of linalool (HPL), and benzisothiazolinone (BIT). The prevalence of certain allergens increased compared to the previous reporting period.

The benefit of late readings in patch testing depends both on allergen and patient characteristics

Susann Forkel et al.

Summary: The study suggests that conducting additional Day 7 readings in patch tests can help identify new positive reactions, particularly in baseline, metal, and leather/shoe series. Patients over 50 years of age and those with a negative irritant control (containing sodium lauryl sulphate) are more likely to have new positive reactions on Day 7. The research recommends always considering individual late readings based on effort-benefit considerations.

Patch test results with the European baseline series, 2019/20-Joint European results of the ESSCA and the EBS working groups of the ESCD, and the GEIDAC

Wolfgang Uter et al.

Summary: This study presents the results of patch testing with the European baseline series (EBS) in multiple European countries. The most common sensitization was to nickel, followed by fragrance mix and Myroxylon pereirae. The study also found that higher concentrations of formaldehyde resulted in more positive reactions, and propolis was the most commonly positive new addition to the EBS.

A Retrospective Review of Late Delayed Positive Patch Testing Greater Than Day 8 at Mayo Clinic From 2001 to 2020

Taylor Viggiano et al.

Summary: This study reviewed late delayed positive reactions that occurred after day 8 at Mayo Clinic. The findings showed that metals, acrylates, and certain substances are most likely to cause late delayed positive reactions. Gold allergens were the most common triggers for these reactions.

Summary: This study retrospectively described 55 patients with allergic reactions to acrylic compounds from 2010 to 2019. The majority of these allergies were occupational in origin, as anaerobic sealants commonly contain sensitizing methacrylates.
