Mechanism for reduction in compressive properties of cementitious materials in relation to internal crack patterns due to ASR and DEF expansion

Taito Miura et al.

Summary: This study discusses the mechanism for the changes in the compressive properties of internally cracked concrete due to expansion phenomena. The internal crack patterns due to alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and delayed ettringite formation (DEF) are reproduced using the model concrete with artificial cementitious aggregate. The compressive behaviors are clarified using a uniaxial compressive test with digital image correlation. As a result, the study proposes a mechanism for the reduction in compressive strength and elastic modulus by the aggregate cracking and gap formation due to ASR and DEF based on the compressive stress transfer path at the cross-sectional area.

Influence of the distribution of expansive sites in aggregates on microscopic damage caused by alkali-silica reaction: Insights into the mechanical origin of expansion

Taito Miura et al.

Summary: This study utilized a mesoscale discrete model to model ASR, investigating the impact of the distribution of expansive sites in the aggregate on ASR expansion and crack patterns. Different crack patterns were observed based on the gel pocket and reaction rim models, showcasing the evolution of cracking with the expansion level.

Time-dependent Effect of Expansion due to Alkali-silica Reaction on Mechanical properties of Concrete

Xi Ji et al.

Summary: The study found that ASR gel has a positive impact on mechanical damage in concrete cracks, and the deteriorated elastic modulus can recover over time. Other ASR studies also show similar trends, indicating that parameters other than material age and expansion can affect the time-dependent mechanical properties of concrete affected by ASR.
