Finite element analysis of thermal-induced reflective cracking in composite pavement with mitigation strategies

Pengyu Xie et al.

Summary: This study developed finite element models to analyze thermal-induced reflective cracking in composite pavement and evaluated the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. The study found that increasing overlay thickness can delay crack initiation and propagation cycles, but the effectiveness decreases after a certain thickness. On the other hand, using stress absorbing interlayer can alleviate the critical stress caused by the movement of concrete joint and shows better cost-effectiveness in mitigating thermal-induced reflective cracking.

Crack Resistance Evaluation for In-Service Asphalt Pavements by Using SCB Tests of Layer-Core Samples

Hui Du et al.

Summary: Transverse cracking is a major distress of asphalt pavements with a semi rigid base, and this study investigated the development and influencing factors of the transverse cracking through laboratory tests and field investigation. The results showed a close relationship between transverse cracking and ESAL, service age, aggregate gradation, and air voids, with the cracking development divided into three stages.

Assessing the Impact of Geosynthetic Interlayers on Laboratory Cracking and Delamination of Hot-Mix Asphalt Mixtures

Sean Cullen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different geosynthetic interlayers on crack propagation and delamination in hot-mix asphalt mixtures. The results showed that geosynthetic interlayers can improve fracture energy and slow crack propagation rates, with fiberglass geogrid interlayers showing the best performance. Overall, the use of geosynthetic interlayers improved cracking resistance and reduced delamination along the asphalt interface.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of top-down crack propagation in asphalt pavements

Mohsen Alae et al.

Summary: The study found that applying realistic tire-pavement contact stresses caused the TDC propagation rate to increase, while the proportion of tensile and shear modes was significantly affected by the TDC depths. Moreover, increasing temperature and reducing vehicle speeds also led to an increase in TDC propagation rate.
