A clean strategy of concrete curing in cold climate: Solar thermal energy storage based on phase change material

Kunyang Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel strategy for concrete curing using solar thermal energy storage based on phase change material (PCM), aiming to prevent frost damage to concrete at an early stage and promote rapid concrete strength growth in cold climates. The proposed method utilizes the latent heat of the thermal energy storage layer (TESL) containing PCM to continuously cure the concrete at a positive temperature, with a transparent insulation layer (TIL) to absorb thermal energy through solar radiation. The study also proposes a numerical method for designing the TESL under different climatic conditions, with an optimal thickness ranging from 0.87 cm to 4.86 cm. Experimental results demonstrate that the concrete specimens cured using this strategy achieve excellent temperature history and reach the design strength in just 60 hours. Economic evaluation results show that the proposed curing method is cost-effective and provides significant energy saving and emission reduction throughout the service cycle. This work provides an efficient and clean solution for rapid concrete construction in cold climates.

Energy usage and human behavior modeling for residential bottom-up energy simulation

Nestor Pereira et al.

Summary: This paper presents a probabilistic modeling approach for simulating residential energy usage at a disaggregated level. Parametric probability distributions are used to model appliance power and human behavior variables, which are adjusted based on known data. The simulation also incorporates self-generated photovoltaic energy and electric vehicle usage. The models obtained from this approach can be used in residential disaggregated simulations, allowing for individual appliances to vary across houses. The probabilistic distributions can provide prior knowledge for energy management systems, risk management, and grid failure prediction, and can be adapted based on real-time changes in house behavior and appliance usage.

Degradation prediction of recycled aggregate concrete under sulphate wetting-drying cycles using BP neural network

Ting Du et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance degradation of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing fly ash under sulphate wetting-drying cycles. The results show that the increase in recycled coarse aggregate incorporation ratio, water-to-binder ratio, and fly ash incorporation ratio leads to a gradual decrease in the mass loss rate of RAC. A linear relationship is observed between the corrosion resistance coefficient of compressive strength and the three influencing factors. Furthermore, a novel model is developed to predict the sulphate resistance of recycled coarse aggregate under wetting-drying cycles using a back propagation neural network.
