Ab initio metadynamics simulations on the formation of calcium silicate aqua complexes prior to the nuleation of calcium silicate hydrate

Yunjian Li et al.

Summary: Two different calcium silicate aqua complexes were identified prior to the nucleation of C-S-H, with distinct stable states and ligand substitution mechanisms on the free energy surface. The findings shed light on the fundamental understanding of calcium silicate species in solution and the pre-nucleation process of C-S-H.

Influences of leaching on the composition, structure and morphology of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) with different Ca/ Si ratios

Yuefeng Ma et al.

Summary: Leaching of hydration products in cement-based materials can lead to a reduced service life of concrete structures. Understanding the leaching mechanism is crucial for preventing damage to concrete structures. This study investigated the leaching mechanism of C-S-H with different Ca/Si ratios by immersing them in NH4Cl solution. The results revealed that decalcification occurred in both interlayer and intralayer of C-S-H, leading to a reduced Ca/Si ratio and the formation of silica gels.

Mesoscale insights on the structure, mechanical performances and the damage process of calcium-silicate-hydrate

Dongshuai Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structure and mechanical properties of colloidal C-S-H gel at the mesoscale through simulation and computational tests. The results indicate that both strength and Young's modulus of C-S-H gel increase exponentially with the packing fraction, demonstrating the feasibility of using the PD method for studying the mechanical performance of C-S-H gel at the mesoscale.
