Effect of curing temperatures on hydration, mechanical and microstructural properties of metakaolin-blended cement mortars

Nordine Leklou et al.

Summary: This work investigated the effect of curing temperature on metakaolin-cement mortar blend. Mortar mixtures with different substitution rates of metakaolin at four different constant curing temperatures were studied. Isothermal calorimetry and compressive strength tests were performed and the results showed that higher curing temperatures accelerated the hydration rate and earlier appearance of the main peak of hydration. The increase in metakaolin dosage improved the reactivity of the binder at all temperatures considered.

The role of hydrotalcite-like phase and monosulfate in slag cement paste during atmospheric and accelerated carbonation

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigated carbonation products in slag-rich cementitious systems under different exposure conditions. The mineralogy of the carbonation products was found to be similar regardless of the exposure environment. In fully carbonated areas, calcium carbonate, carbonated hydrotalcite-like phase, and Ca-Al AFm phases were identified as the main carbonate phases. In mildly carbonated areas, monosulfate and calcium hydroxide clusters were observed again. The study also revealed that carbonated Ca-Al AFm phases and hydrotalcite-like phase could absorb a significant amount of CO2 initially, but the absorption capacity decreased in fully carbonated areas. Additionally, the Mg/Al atomic ratio of the hydrotalcite-like phase remained relatively constant during carbonation.

Valorization of converter steel slag into eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete by ambient CO2 pre-treatment

Gang Liu et al.

Summary: Converter steel slag, a by-product of the steel-making process, shows high reactivity in a CO2 rich environment. This study demonstrates that modified converter steel slag after CO2 pretreatment can be used as a supplementary cementitious material in eco-friendly ultra-high performance concrete, achieving higher compressive strength and improving microstructure. The carbonation process modifies the physical and chemical properties of slag particles, enhancing cement hydration and reducing leaching of potentially hazardous elements in UHPC mixtures.

Impact of limestone fineness on cement hydration at early age

Yosra Briki et al.

Summary: The study found that fine limestone has a significant impact on cement hydration, effectively offsetting the dilution effect caused by the decrease of clinker amount, while the influence of coarse limestone on cement hydration is limited to dilution effect. A linear correlation between strength and gel space ratio was observed for the combination of fine and coarse limestone systems. Despite similar specific surface area, limestone is found to be more effective than quartz in enhancing cement hydration.
