Performance assessment of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3)-Based lightweight green mortars incorporating recycled waste aggregate

Hussam Alghamdi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on lightweight limestone-calcined clay cement (LC3) containing expanded hollow perlite waste as fine aggregate. By replacing 60% of the weight of White Portland Cement (WPC), LC3-based mortars with expanded hollow perlite waste were prepared. The addition of expanded hollow perlite waste can reduce the thermal conductivity of the mortar, improve the lightweight properties, and maintain structural strength after fire exposure for a certain period of time.

Comparing the effects of in-situ nano-calcite development and ex-situ nano-calcite addition on cement hydration

Sean Monkman et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of in-situ formation and ex-situ addition of calcium carbonate nanoparticles on cement hydration. The results show that ex-situ addition accelerates the hydration reaction more effectively. CO2 injection increases the formation of calcium carbonate, but has a relatively small effect on the acceleration of the hydration reaction.

Hydration and phase development of recycled cement

Jose Alexandre Bogas et al.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth analysis of the rehydration behavior of recycled cement obtained by thermally activating waste cementitious materials. The study reveals that recycled cement shows a significant hydration rate after 24 hours, with a longer induction period and a late acceleration peak compared to Portland cement. The analysis also shows early development of certain phases in recycled cement paste. Additionally, the study identifies the main phase in anhydrous recycled cement and indicates a higher degree of hydration in the recycled cement paste at 28 days but a lower total volume of long-term hydrates.

Capturing the early-age physicochemical transformations of alkali-activated fly ash and slag using ultrasonic pulse velocity technique

Aziz Hasan Mahmood et al.

Summary: This study systematically monitored the reaction heat and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of alkali-activated low calcium fly ash with different concentrations of alkaline solutions and various dosages of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The results showed that the addition of slag affected the reaction kinetics, physical transformation rate, and morphological features. UPV could capture the effect of slag addition on microstructure densification, which was confirmed by heat evolution measurements and SEM-EDS microstructural observations.

Recycling of crushed waste clay brick as aggregates in cement mortars: An approach from macro- and micro-scale investigation

Qian Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that regardless of curing conditions, recycled mortars with dry WCB had higher mechanical properties and lower water absorption, while the opposite was true for pre-soaked WCB mortars. Although the internal curing effect of WCB was more pronounced under air curing, overall performance was better under standard curing conditions. Incorporation of dry or pre-soaked WCB increased the porosity of recycled mortars, which could be used for producing cleaner building materials.

Accelerated carbonation of fresh cement-based products containing recycled masonry aggregates for CO2 sequestration

David Suescum-Morales et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of accelerated carbonation on the mechanical properties, dry bulk density, porosity accessible to water, and CO2 sequestration capacity of cement-based materials with different ratios of natural aggregate to recycled masonry aggregate. The results show that accelerated carbonation can improve mechanical properties, reduce accessible porosity, increase dry bulk density, and enhance CO2 sequestration efficiency. Additionally, substituting natural aggregate with recycled masonry aggregate does not significantly impact the mechanical properties of the materials.

Summary: The increase in global construction and demolition waste poses a threat to the economy and sustainability, with India's construction sector experiencing rapid growth. Efforts to quantify and manage C&D waste in India have been limited by challenges in coordination and implementation of regulations. Despite the implementation of C&D Waste Management Rules, recycling of C&D waste in India remains inefficient due to capacity limitations and lack of government monitoring.
