Geopolymer concrete with metakaolin for sustainability: a comprehensive review on raw material's properties, synthesis, performance, and potential application

Bharat Bhushan Jindal et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, the demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly concrete has led to the development of low carbon concretes such as geopolymer concrete. Metakaolin, commonly used as an additive or replacement for cement, has been investigated as a precursor in geopolymer concrete due to its effective pozzolanic properties. Various studies have examined the effects of metakaolin on the properties of geopolymer concrete, including factors such as alkali content, solids/liquids ratio, molar ratio, and curing regime. The findings generally suggest that metakaolin as a precursor produces better geopolymer products with improved durability and performance.

A critical review of electrical-resistance-based self-sensing in conductive cement-based materials

D. D. L. Chung

Summary: Self-sensing is a valuable feature for smart structures, achieved by measuring the electrical resistance of the structural material, which is affected by strain and damage. In cement-based materials, adding conductive admixtures such as carbon fiber can change the resistance upon compression, tension, and flexure. The sensing performance is best when the admixture volume fraction is near the percolation threshold. The four-probe method is more reliable than the two-probe method for measuring resistance.

Mohsen Falahatkar Gashti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the radiation shielding properties of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) based geopolymer concrete (GGC) with different contents of magnetite aggregates. Self-sensing properties and piezoresistive effect of high ductility cementitious composite

Jinsheng Han et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of self-sensing high ductility cementitious composite (HDCC) in structural health monitoring. A carbon fiber reinforced HDCC with the addition of nano-carbon black and carbon fiber was designed and tested under compression and tension conditions. The experimental results analyze the sensing properties and piezoresistive effect of the proposed HDCC. The findings suggest that the HDCC has high ultimate tensile strain and good electrical sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio when the water-binder ratio is 0.3.

Mechanical properties and piezoresistive performances of intrinsic graphene nanoplate/cement-based sensors subjected to impact load

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrical, mechanical, and piezoresistive properties of graphene nanoplate (GNP)/cementitious composites after exposure to impact load. The results show that the composites filled with 2% GNP exhibit better stability and less variation in properties after impact compared to the composites filled with 1% GNP. This suggests that 2% GNP filled composites have great potential as cement-based sensors, providing stable piezoresistivity even after exposure to impact load.
