Summary: A new method was developed to characterize the aggregate segregation during Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) using a three-dimensional (3D) model. The study found that asphalt mixtures with different aggregate gradations have different compaction characteristics. Aggregate segregation significantly affects micromechanical behavior and increases with gyration numbers, influenced by gradation types. Additionally, the uniaxial compressive strength and cohesion of the Superpave-13 specimen decreased, whereas the friction angle increased with the increase of GPSI.

Summary: Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on asphalt mixtures with six loading rates to investigate their failure characteristics and modes. Acoustic emission (AE) technology was used to monitor the entire failure process, and typical AE characteristic parameters were analyzed. The results showed that the failure load and compressive strength of the asphalt mixtures increased significantly with the loading rate. Correlation analysis revealed favorable correlation and regularity in the amplitude-hits and amplitude-energy for loading rates of 0.2-5 mm/min, but no regularity for a loading rate of 0.05 mm/min. The dominant frequency of the AE signals ranged from 50-350 kHz, and the failure mode could be identified based on the difference in AE parameters and dominant frequency distribution.

Summary: The correlation and difference of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) modified asphalt rheological and microscopic performance under field aging and laboratory aging were analyzed. It was found that the rheological and microscopic performance after construction aging (CA) treatment is not significantly different from that after rotating film oven test (RTFOT) treatment. However, the micro performance indexes of pressure aging vessel (PAV) were significantly lower than those of 1 year field aging (1A) and 5 years field aging (5A), indicating that accelerated aging cannot fully simulate the aging behavior in more complex situations.

Summary: Asphalt aging is a significant factor causing cracking failures in asphalt pavements. Due to the increasing complexity of asphalt mixture composition and interactions, relying solely on volumetric design does not result in optimal performance. Therefore, it is necessary to improve test methods for asphalt mixture performance and develop more durable mixtures.

Summary: The development of a pore cellular structure model provided a reference for the gradation-refined design of asphalt mixtures. Gradation was identified as a key determinant of contact points, number of pore cells, and distribution area. Interference coefficient and skeleton rate were found to be effective indicators for evaluating the meso-structure of asphalt mixtures and ensuring a stable main skeleton formation.

Summary: This study presents an approach to simulate the internal structure of asphalt mixtures by constructing virtual cylindrical samples with customized aggregate contacts. The results show that the proposed approach effectively controls the aggregate contact in asphalt mixtures and the virtual samples exhibit similar aggregate contact properties as realistic samples. The correlation between contact properties and deformation resistance is also demonstrated through displacement-controlled testing.

Summary: A multiscale method was developed to simulate the mechanical response of asphalt pavement, revealing stress concentrations and different damage modes within the AC layer. Different cracking patterns and damage modes were observed for CTB and GB pavements at varying temperatures. Increasing the thickness of the AC layer effectively reduced the stress level at the top of the AC layer for CTB pavements at low temperatures.

Summary: Geometric characteristics of aggregates are essential in forming the gradation skeleton and influencing the deformation characteristics of asphalt mixture. This study proposed a Skeleton Stability Index (SSI) based on the idea of variable weight to represent the skeleton contact stability of graded aggregate system, while also analyzing the slip creep properties of asphalt mixture. The results show a good correlation between SSI and the maximum slip force (F-m), indicating the effectiveness of SSI in characterizing the skeleton contact stability, and different stages of creep deformation impact the deformation behavior of asphalt mixture.

Summary: This paper evaluates the effects of steel slag on the mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures and proposes a modified mix design method to incorporate steel slag. Results show that the use of steel slag improves the rutting resistance and low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. The steel slag mixture exhibits good stability and skid resistance. The modified Marshall design method can effectively guide the mix design and reduce engineering costs and environmental impact.

Summary: This study explores the use of machine learning models to simplify and accelerate the Superpave mixture design procedure. The model predicts effective and absorbed asphalt content to achieve an automated and timesaving mix design method. The study compares different machine learning algorithms and encoding methods, and finds that the Gradient boosting model performs the best in predicting asphalt content. The proposed method is verified to be consistent with the traditional Superpave method through a case study.

Summary: Balanced mix design (BMD) is becoming popular in US highway agencies as it allows responsible incorporation of innovations into asphalt mixtures and improves their durability and performance. Monotonic loading test methods, particularly the indirect tensile test (IDT) at high temperatures, are effective in assessing the cracking and rutting potential of asphalt mixtures.

Summary: This study used the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to simulate the Marshall impact compaction (MIC) process of asphalt mixture and proposed a new index for the unbalance force of coarse aggregate particles. The results showed that the vertical displacement of coarse aggregate particles was larger than the horizontal displacement in the MIC process. The vertical displacement increased with the size of the aggregate particles, indicating an increase in contact number and vertical unbalance force. The horizontal displacement and rotation angle of coarse aggregate increased during the initial compaction process and then stabilized. The unbalance force of coarse aggregate decreased with the number of blows, indicating the tendency of asphalt mixture to become stable with compaction.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the composition of various dispersed systems on the performance of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) mixture, based on mortar theory. The optimal gradation composition of coarse aggregates and the recommended ratios of mineral filler-to-asphalt and fine aggregate-to-asphalt mortar are proposed. The results show that the performance of the SMA-13 mixture is positively correlated with reserved air void (V-0) and primary control sieve passing rate, and can be improved by more than 10% with the suggested gradation.

Summary: As state agencies aim to increase the longevity of asphalt materials, performance testing during mixture design and production has become popular. A study by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) evaluated the asphalt mixtures in New York using balanced mixture design (BMD). The results revealed that some volumetrically designed asphalt mixtures had insufficient asphalt content for fatigue cracking resistance, but no rutting issues were found. Polymer modification in asphalt binders was found to expand the range of asphalt contents achieving a balanced condition.
