Investigation on rheological characteristics of low-emissions crumb rubber modified asphalt

Haihui Duan et al.

Summary: The high- and low-temperature performances of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) are insufficiently researched, which limits their application. In this study, the high-temperature performances of two low-emissions CRMA were investigated, and it was found that microwave-treated CR could meet workability requirements, while deodorant-added CR could not. Both microwave-treated CR and deodorant-added CR improved the high-temperature performances of asphalt, but microwave-treated CR had a lower positive effect on the performance grades, elastic recovery, and deformation resistance of asphalt. Additionally, both types of low-emissions CRMA showed different viscoelastic behavior compared to SBS modified asphalt. Furthermore, 18% CR-microwave or CR-deodorant could improve the low-temperature performance grades of asphalt. Based on the overall consideration of workability and high- and low-temperature performances, 18% CR-microwave is recommended for low-emissions CRMA manufacture.

Optimal zeolite structure design for VOC emission reduction in asphalt materials

Xiwen Chang et al.

Summary: Asphalt releases harmful VOC when heated. Porous materials like zeolite are promoted as they can reduce asphalt VOC through physical and chemical adsorption. This study compares the VOC emissions from zeolite-modified asphalt with different structural characteristics to explore their influence on VOC reduction. Results show that Si/Al ratio affects the types of VOC released. Particle size has a greater impact on VOC emissions than Si/Al ratio, with larger particles having a better reduction effect. Nano polycrystalline zeolite has a stronger VOC reduction effect than single crystal zeolite. Overall, nano-polycrystalline zeolite with large particle size is a better choice for reducing benzene series VOC.

Rheological properties and microscopic characteristics of rejuvenated asphalt using different components from waste cooking oil

Yuechao Zhao et al.

Summary: The utilization of waste in society is important for sustainable development. This study focused on waste cooking oil (WCO) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), and investigated the impact of different components of WCO on the rheological properties and microscopic characteristics of aged asphalt. The results showed that all components of WCO had a significant effect on mitigating the brittleness of aged asphalt. However, certain wax-like substances in WCO had a negative effect on the fatigue and low-temperature performance of aged asphalt.

Recycling fish scale powder in improving the performance of asphalt: A sustainable utilization of fish scale waste in asphalt

Songtao Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of fish scale powder (FSP) on the performance of asphalt binders, finding that FSP enhances adhesion, viscoelastic properties, temperature susceptibility, and resistance to permanent deformation of asphalt, with little effect on aging and cracking resistance at low content. The physical mixing between FSP and asphalt binder results in a storage-stable product, indicating promising and feasible utilization of FSP as a bio-modifier for asphalt binders.
