Diseases failures characteristics and countermeasures of expressway tunnel of water-rich strata: A case study

Shuoshuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and causes of tunnel failure in water-rich strata using radar scanning, drilling, and laser scanning methods. The results reveal that water-rich strata, expansive soil, and the development of surrounding rock joints are the main factors causing the failure of the Jizhao tunnel. A comprehensive set of solutions was proposed and applied successfully to address cracks, water seepage, and inverted uplift in the tunnel.

Experimental investigation on the effect of open fire on the tensile properties and damage evolution behavior of granite

Tubing Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of open fire and different cooling methods on granites. The results show that the fire duration and cooling treatment significantly affect the mechanical properties of granite. The P-wave velocity, static nominal tensile strength, and dynamic nominal tensile strength of granite decrease rapidly during the initial 10 minutes and slowly decrease thereafter. Water-cooling treatment causes greater damage to heated granite compared to air-cooling treatment.

Real-Time Measurement of Mechanical Behavior of Granite During Heating-Cooling Cycle: A Mineralogical Perspective

Chengkang Mo et al.

Summary: Changes in mechanical properties of rocks at high temperatures are important to scientific and engineering problems. This study investigates the micromechanical properties of four representative minerals in granites and analyzes the changes in mineral structure. The experimental results show that the mechanical properties of quartz, plagioclase, and amphibole change during the heating-cooling cycle, while the properties of biotite are mainly affected by the size of cracks. The real-time measured micromechanical properties of minerals can be used to predict the macromechanical behaviors of rocks.

A damage constitutive model of rock-like materials containing a single crack under the action of chemical corrosion and uniaxial compression

Pan Ji-lian et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for describing the deformation and strength characteristics of corroded rock-like specimens containing a single crack under uniaxial compression using a damage constitutive model. The model combines the damage of micro-flaws and macro-cracks, and the damage variable is modified to consider the residual strength characteristics of the material. The model is successfully verified by comparing the experimental stress-strain curves and is in good agreement with literature results.

Physical and mechanical properties of granite after high-temperature and acidic treatment for the enhanced geothermal system

Longchuan Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical and mechanical properties of granite in a hot dry rock reservoir after high-temperature and acidic treatment. It uses acoustic emission monitoring to evaluate damage degree and dynamic evolution. Acidic treatment leads to a decrease in the physical and mechanical properties of the granite, and a weakening of the acoustic emission response.

Experimental investigation of the uniaxial compressive behavior of thin building granite

Baofeng Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the uniaxial compressive behavior of thin granite material and found that brittle columnar fracture was the typical damage mode. The stress-strain diagrams of specimens with different lengths exhibited nonlinear pre-peak geometrical shapes and varying post-peak behaviors. Compressive strength varied with specimen geometries, and strength modification formulas were found to be inapplicable to the tested specimens.

Summary: This study investigates the variations in physical and mechanical properties of different types of rocks induced by high temperatures and chemical erosion, as well as the mechanism of damage formation. High temperatures and acidic solutions can cause an increase in rock cracks, structure damage, and weakened particle bonding.

Effects of tunnel fires on the mechanical behaviour of rocks in the vicinity - A review

P. L. P. Wasantha et al.

Summary: The increasing use of underground tunnels for transportation globally has led to a rise in tunnel fire incidents, prompting the need for more detailed analysis of the effects of tunnel fires on surrounding structures. Different tunnel structures exhibit varying degrees of heat transfer and effects during fires. More research is needed on the impact of tunnel fires on rock mass and potential new testing methods are proposed to further understand this phenomenon.

Micro- and macrocracking behaviors in granite and molded gypsum containing a single flaw

Guokai Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of preexisting defects has a significant impact on the fracture behaviors in rock engineering, with the angle of the flaw affecting the initiation stress of micro- and macrocracks. The study suggests using AE monitoring to identify crack initiation stages rather than relying solely on stress-strain behaviors, photographic observations, or P-wave measurements.
