A machine learning model to predict unconfined compressive strength of alkali-activated slag-based cemented paste backfill

Chathuranga Balasooriya Arachchilage et al.

Summary: In this study, machine learning methods were used to predict the unconfined compressive strength of alkali-activated slag-based cemented paste backfill. The results showed that ensemble learning methods outperformed single learning methods in predicting the strength. Relative importance analysis revealed that curing time and water-to-binder ratio were the most critical input parameters in the model.

The roles of cenosphere in ultra-lightweight foamed geopolymer concrete (UFGC)

Jinyan Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the control of stability in lightweight chemical foaming mixtures and prepares ultra-lightweight foamed geopolymer concrete by replacing part of fly ash with cenospheres. The results show that increasing the substitution ratio of cenospheres helps in generating smaller initial bubbles but adversely affects the long-term stability of the bubbles. The mixture with 50% cenospheres exhibits the best stability and hardened pore structure.

Flexural strength and fatigue properties of interfacial transition zone at the microscale

Yidong Gan et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the flexural strength and fatigue properties of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) at the micrometre length scale. The results showed that the flexural strength of the ITZ is significantly higher than the macroscopic strength reported in literature, while the fatigue strength is lower than that of bulk cement paste. The study suggests that the microscopic mechanical interlocking and electrostatic interaction contribute to the bond strength of the ITZ. This research provides an experimental basis for the multiscale analysis of concrete under static and fatigue loading.

Thermal properties of calcium sulfoaluminate cement-based mortars incorporated with expanded perlite cured at cold temperatures

Guangping Huang et al.

Summary: Incorporating expanded perlite into calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement-based mortars can significantly reduce their thermal conductivity, showing great potential for energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly building materials. The study also found that the thermal properties of CSA cement-based mortars were mainly affected by the aggregate replacement ratios.
