Unlocking the role of recycled aggregates in the performance enhancement and CO2 capture of reactive magnesia cement formulations

Chenyu Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, the strength development of CO2-cured RMC-RCA was explored for the first time, and the strength variation among groups was interpreted by microstructural analyses. The initial results show that the strength of RMC-RCA is higher compared to samples with natural aggregates, which could be attributed to its refined microstructures and larger carbonation depths. The presence of porous ITZs in RCA contributes to better CO2 diffusion, as described in the proposed revised CO2 diffusion model. Overall, this preliminary study could pave the path for the upcycling of RCAs in RMC concrete on a large scale while enabling a pronounced CO2 capture potential.

Synthesis and characterization of a new super absorbent polymer (SAP) via the use of low-grade kaolin through inverse suspension polymerization

Junying Lai et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a low-grade kaolin-enhanced SAP through inverse suspension polymerization and investigated its performances in deionized water, the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution, and the supernatant of the cement slurry. The synthesized SAP showed a spherical shape with uniform particle size and good dispersion after water saturation. The use of low-grade kaolin was found to enhance the absorbency of SAP, especially with 7.5% concentration, but its absorbency was sensitive to water temperatures and relative humidity. Compounding inorganic materials into SAP can reduce synthesis costs and improve cost efficiency. The absorbency of the synthesized SAP was similar in the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and the supernatant of the cement slurry.

Microstructural behaviour and shrinkage properties of high-strength fiber-reinforced seawater sea-sand concrete

Davoud Vafaei et al.

Summary: The use of seawater and dredged sea-sand in concrete manufacturing can bring environmental and economic benefits, but the lack of information limits their industrial application. This study investigates the shrinkage performance of high-strength fiber-reinforced seawater sea-sand concrete and finds that the use of seawater and sea-sand increases the shrinkage, while the addition of fibers decreases it. Furthermore, compared to conventional concrete, the incorporation of fibers in seawater sea-sand concrete increases its long-term porosity.

Xiong Zhang et al.

Summary: The alkali-activated technique with zeolite as an additional material was used to consolidate municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) with high heavy metal concentration. The results showed that the compressive strength of alkali-activated MSWIFA with 40 wt% zeolite substitution was the highest, and the inclusion of zeolite improved heavy metal solidification. Additional minerals in the alkali-activated MSWIFA matrix were discovered, and the leaching concentrations of heavy metals in the specimens met the Chinese criteria.

Effects of red mud on workability and mechanical properties of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC)

Yufeng Song et al.

Summary: Red mud poses a severe threat to the environment and needs to be properly disposed of. When using red mud in autoclave aerated concrete (AAC), its low activity and small particle size negatively impact the workability and strength of AAC. Additionally, a higher amount of red mud results in worse pore structure and excessive content of tobermorite, leading to reduced strength. The optimal ratio of red mud to replace fly ash in AAC is 22.5%, and the overall performance of AAC with red mud can be greatly improved by using polycarboxylic acid or adjusting the water-solid ratio, meeting the standard requirements.

Summary: This study investigated spent caustic as an alkaline activator for consolidating municipal solid waste incineration fly ash, finding that spent caustic-activated mortars had higher compressive strength than NaOH-activated mortars. The presence of ettringite, C-(A)-S-H, carbonate, and organics in spent caustic-activated mortars enhanced the compressive strength. The use of spent caustic as an activator in waste management through alkaline activation was found to be cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Optimization of mix proportion of alkali-activated slag mortars prepared with seawater and coral sand

Bai Zhang et al.

Summary: An innovative building material, SC-AAMs, prepared with seawater and coral sand, was proposed to effectively utilize marine resources for sustainable development in construction industry. Experimental results indicated that increasing alkali activator modulus and alkaline contents improved compressive and flexural strengths but affected setting time and drying shrinkage. The optimal mixture for SC-AAMs was determined to be M-s = 1.2, N/B = 4%, W/B = 0.45, and R-s = 100%. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed that the alkali-activated materials changed reaction hydrate products and improved interfacial microstructures.
