A review on photocatalytic asphalt pavement designed for degradation of vehicle exhausts

Xiaoqing Li et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review on the recent developments in utilizing photocatalytic asphalt pavement for reducing vehicle pollutants. It covers the mechanism of photocatalysis, testing facilities, quantifying methods, techniques of applying TiO2 particles onto asphalt pavements, influencing factors on pollutants degradation, and future perspectives. The key factors influencing the efficiency and durability of photocatalytic asphalt pavement include nano-TiO2 crystal types, doping approach, ambient temperature, relative humidity, intensity and time of irradiation, and pollutant characteristics. Currently, photocatalytic asphalt pavement can achieve a degradation efficiency of 55% for NOx pollutants and 20% for SO2 pollutants, but it suffers from short service life due to busy traffics and complex weather circumstances. In the future, practical costs, applying methods, durability, and negative effects are highly emphasized for the development of sustainable and durable photocatalytic roads.

Structural properties of volcanic precursors-based geopolymers before and after natural weathering

Roberta Occhipinti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural properties of geopolymers made from locally available volcanic feedstocks for the development of sustainable non-structural building materials. Geopolymer binders and mortars based on volcanic pyroclastic residues from Mt. Etna were examined to assess their response to natural weathering. The results show that volcanic ash-based geopolymers have a better resistance to weathering in the hot summer Mediterranean climate zone compared to ghiara-based products.

Study on the effect and mechanism of cement-based material retarder on red mud-based hybrid alkali activated cement

Chunjin Lin et al.

Summary: This study discusses the effects of sodium gluconate, sodium hexametaphosphate, and sodium tripolyphosphate on the rheological behavior and mechanical property of red mud-based hybrid alkali activated cement (RM-HAAC). It aims to provide reference and guidance for the engineering application of RM-HAAC and shed light on red mud utilization. The results show that sodium gluconate delays the hydration rate, sodium hexametaphosphate promotes the hydration rate, and sodium tripolyphosphate has a certain promoting effect. The 28-day compressive strength is improved under the influence of retarder and sodium tripolyphosphate shows the largest strength increase.

Characterization of class C and F fly ashes based geopolymers incorporating silica fume

Emre Yavuz et al.

Summary: Geopolymers with appropriate mechanical performances and eco-friendly impacts have been proposed as an alternative to ordinary concrete. This study investigated the interaction between different types of fly ash and silica fume in geopolymers. The results showed that the concentration of alkali activator had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of geopolymers. It was found that using a combination of fly ash and silica fume improved the mechanical properties of geopolymers. Geopolymers prepared with class F fly ash exhibited higher mechanical properties and fewer cracks.

The underlying role of sodium tripolyphosphate on the cementitious mechanism of calcium carbonate binder

Lulu Cheng et al.

Summary: Through the presence of STPP, the optimal colloidal structure with vaterite as the binding phase can be obtained, with a compressive strength of up to 16.99 MPa. The effect of STPP depends on its content, inhibiting the nucleation and growth of vaterite and calcite at low contents, and forming vaterite on the surface of bulk ACC through coupling mechanism at high contents.

Cu-TiO2/SiO2 photocatalysts for concrete-based building materials: Self-cleaning and air de-pollution performance

S. Khannyra et al.

Summary: The integration of Cu-TiO2 photocatalysts into silica sol-gel synthesis for manufacturing new long-lasting term coatings has been proven to enhance self-cleaning and air purification properties in concrete-based building materials. The presence of Cu improves the performance of TiO2, resulting in increased photoactivity. By increasing the copper loading, the efficiency of TiO2 photocatalysts can be enhanced, although excessive copper loading may lead to decreased performance.

Physical and mechanical properties of sustainable vegetal concrete exposed to extreme weather conditions

Muhammad Riaz Ahmad et al.

Summary: The study found that vegetal concrete exposed to extreme environmental conditions experienced loss in mass, reduction in sample area, and decrease in compressive strength, mainly due to the dissolution and leaching out of the binder. When immersed in salt solution, the concrete mixtures exhibited mass increase and swelling due to the formation of salt layer on the surface.

Influencing mechanism of sodium tripolyphosphate on the rheological properties of magnesium phosphate cement

Cong Ma et al.

Summary: Magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) has been widely used in grouting engineering due to its quick setting, high early-strength, and excellent volume stability. This study investigated the effects of sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) content on the rheological properties of MPC pastes, showing that STP content can impact the plastic viscosity and yield stress of MPC. Further analysis is needed to distinguish the influencing mechanisms of STP on different rheological parameters.
