Cognition-driven navigation assistive system for emergency indoor wayfinding (CogDNA): Proof of concept and evidence

Tianyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposes and tests a real-time cognition-driven navigation assistive system for emergency wayfinding called CogDNA. CogDNA measures responders' real-time cognitive load and mental status based on high-frequent pupillometer and gazes tracking data. The elements and formats of the primary wayfinding information are adjusted based on individualized cognitive load models and the mental fatigue status measured by pupillometer data. The findings prove the efficacy of adaptive wayfinding information systems based on real-time cognitive load measures for future emergency wayfinding tasks.

Hand gesture teleoperation for dexterous manipulators in space station by using monocular hand motion capture

Qing Gao et al.

Summary: To address the issues of heavy tasks and limited number of astronauts in the space station, a hand gesture teleoperation method based on monocular hand motion capture and video-calling tools is proposed. This method enables free and convenient teleoperation. The work is divided into two parts: monocular hand motion capture and teleoperation framework for dexterous manipulators. Experimental results show that the proposed hand pose estimation method outperforms existing methods, and physical experiments validate the effectiveness of the hand gesture teleoperation method on a space dexterous manipulator platform.

Sensory augmentation for subsea robot teleoperation

Pengxiang Xia et al.

Summary: This research proposes a hierarchical intuitive control method based on Virtual Reality (VR) and haptic simulators to enhance human perception of subsea ROV and workplace conditions. A distributed sensor system is used to collect hydrodynamic data, which is integrated in a Digital Twins (DT) module for data augmentation. Multi-level sensory feedback methods, including 3D visual feedback and haptic suit tactile feedback, are generated and sent to human operators through haptic devices. This system ensures an immersive awareness of proximity conditions and predictions of potential damage during ROV operations, enabling less-trained operators to pilot the ROV based on intuition.
