An eXtended Finite Element Method implementation in COMSOL Multiphysics: Solid Mechanics

Ahmad Jafari et al.

Summary: This paper presents the implementation of the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) in COMSOL Multiphysics for the first time and proposes an enrichment strategy consistent with the software structure. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are examined and validated through numerical examples.

PorePy: an open-source software for simulation of multiphysics processes in fractured porous media

Eirik Keilegavlen et al.

Summary: Development of models and methods for dynamics in fractured rocks is an active research field, facing challenges such as high aspect ratio of fractures, complex fracture networks, and crucial impact of changing processes on fracture-rock interface. This paper discusses design principles and framework for introducing fractures in simulators, implemented in the open-source software PorePy for coupled simulation of flow, transport, and deformation in fractured reservoirs. The flexibility and validation of the framework are demonstrated through simulations of flow, poroelasticity, fracture deformation, and injection-driven fracture deformation. All results are reproducible using openly available simulation scripts.

Numerical analysis of multiple hydro-fracture growth in layered media based on a non-differentiable energy minimization approach

M. Vahab et al.

Summary: The study investigates the evolution of hydraulically driven fractures in naturally layered and fractured media using a non-differentiable energy minimization approach. A Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization is employed, providing great flexibility in modeling multiple fractures. Results show the robustness and versatility of the algorithm in capturing aspects that were overlooked in previous literature.

Fully coupled XFEM formulation for hydraulic fracturing simulation based on a generalized fluid leak-off model

A. Jafari et al.

Summary: A novel fully coupled hydro-mechanical model is used to assess the effect of fluid loss on the efficiency of fracturing treatment within saturated porous media. The model incorporates the formation of a cake layer, effects of filtrate, and independent pressure degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations demonstrate the framework's ability to model hydraulic fracturing in medium to low permeability formations.

Fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model with oversaturation and its validation to experimental data from FEBEX experiment

Summary: The paper presents a mathematical model for analyzing coupled thermohydro-mechanical processes in bentonite and bentonite-based sealing barriers in deep geological repositories. The model uses standard test data and attempts to incorporate special characteristics of bentonite behavior, which is crucial for understanding the long-term performance of barriers. It is implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics and validated through simulation of THM processes from the FEBEX experiment.
