Assessment of seismic behavior of back-to-back mechanically stabilized earth walls using 1g shaking table tests

Majid Yazdandoust et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seismic behavior of back-to-back MSE walls (BBMSEWs) by analyzing the effect of overlap length of reinforcements and arrangement of connecting two opposing walls. The results show that the fundamental frequency of BBMSEWs is strongly influenced by the arrangement of reinforcements, with a decrease observed in the f(f) value as the overlap length decreases. Increasing the overlap length and separating the bottom half of the walls can effectively reduce acceleration amplification in BBMSEWs. The failure surface geometry is found to be unaffected by overlap length changes, but rather determined by the arrangement of connecting two opposing walls. Additionally, increasing the a(y) values through overlap length and connection changes suggests that direct connection of walls and suitable overlap length can improve the seismic stability of BBMSEWs. It is also noted that while the use of overlapping reinforcement leads to increased lateral displacements, it can reduce mobilized reinforcement forces in BBMSEWs.

Three-dimensional rigorous upper-bound limit analysis of soil slopes subjected to variable seismic excitations

Ze-Hang Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a semi-analytical model that combines the three-dimensional (3D) kinematic approach of limit analysis and the modified pseudo-dynamic method was developed to assess the critical safety factor of slopes from a realistic and holistic perspective. The model utilizes time-space dependent sinusoidal-cosinusoidal waves to represent cyclic effects of seismic waves and incorporates shaking amplitude and damping effect. A 3D discretized failure mechanism comprising a series of kinematically admissible triangle meshes was generated. Numerical simulations and comparisons of dynamic safety factors and plastic zones were conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed model. Comparisons and parametric analyses highlighted the importance of considering the third dimension of slopes, damping ratios, and the relationship between shaking frequency and natural frequency.

Centrifuge Modeling of the Seismic Behavior of Soft Clay Slopes

Cristian Yair Soriano Camelo et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results and analysis of two centrifuge experiments simulating the seismic response of a gentle slope in soft clay. The experiments found that the slope angle and shaking intensity had an impact on the seismic response, with the six-degree slope experiencing three times greater permanent displacements than the three-degree slope.

Research on influence of anchor cable failure on slope dynamic response

Zhibo Jia et al.

Summary: Anchor cables are widely used in slope reinforcement and their fracture can cause slope instability. This study focuses on modifying the anchor cable model to simulate fracture effects. The dynamic response characteristics and the influence of pre-tension are analyzed. It is found that anchor cable failure significantly affects slope safety and can lead to the release of soil stress, resulting in larger residual displacement.

A state parameter-based scaling law for centrifuge modelling

Qiang Ma et al.

Summary: A state parameter-based centrifuge scaling law is proposed in this paper to ensure the same shear strain between the model and the prototype. The proposed scaling law controls the model and the prototype to have the same initial state parameter by adjusting the void ratio of the model. The applicability of the proposed scaling law is confirmed by centrifuge model test results.

Pseudo-dynamic analysis of reinforced slope with anchor cables

Jiaping Sun et al.

Summary: This work proposes a novel approach combining the minimum potential energy principle with the pseudo-dynamic method to determine the safety factor of reinforced slopes. By solving the mobilized shear stress on the slip surface using the moment equilibrium equation and introducing the elastic foundation coefficient, the slope stability is evaluated by calculating the ratio of the anti-sliding moment to the sliding moment. The method is efficient and accurate, and the influence of various factors on the safety factor is examined.

Pseudo-static analysis of reinforced earth retaining walls

H. Alhajj Chehade et al.

Summary: This paper examines the seismic behavior of earth retaining walls using the upper bound theorem of limit analysis and discretization technique, with pseudo-static approach to model seismic effects. The extended methodology proposed is validated against conventional limit analysis results and a parametric study is conducted to identify the effects of key parameters on required reinforcement strength.
