Bearing capacity and deformation behavior of rigid strip footings on coral sand slopes

Zhao-gang Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the bearing capacity and deformation behavior of a rigid strip footing on coral sand slopes using model-scale tests. The results show that geogrid reinforcement significantly improves the bearing capacity of coral sand slopes. The bearing capacity increases with the increasing edge distance and the decreasing slope height and angle.

Bearing capacity of shallow strip foundations on reinforced soil subjected to combined loading using upper bound theorem of finite element limit analysis and second-order cone programming

Ardavan Izadi et al.

Summary: The bearing capacity of shallow strip foundations on both unreinforced and reinforced granular soils under combined loading conditions was analyzed using upper bound limit analysis and second-order cone programming. The inclusion of horizontal geogrid elements in the granular soil was used to reinforce the foundation. The results were compared and validated against different cases and showed that the reinforcement layer(s) significantly improved the bearing capacity in the V-M space.

Limit load space of rigid strip footing on cohesive-frictional soil subjected to eccentrically inclined loads

Quang N. Pham et al.

Summary: This paper estimates the ultimate bearing capacity of rigid strip footings under eccentrically inclined loads using the rigid plastic finite element method. The study considers the effect of soil properties and footing width on the loading planes and clarifies the effect of positive and negative horizontal loads on the limit load space. The results show that the direction of the horizontal load has a notable effect on the bearing capacity, but this effect becomes negligible for large eccentricity lengths.

Seismic bearing capacity factor N? for a rough strip footing on sloping ground

Jyant Kumar et al.

Summary: The method of stress characteristics (MOSC) and finite elements limit analysis (FELA) were employed to compute the bearing capacity factor N gamma for a rough strip footing over sloping ground surface in the presence of horizontal pseudo-static earthquake inertial forces. Two different failure mechanisms were considered and the results from both analyses were found to be very close.

Influence of failure mechanism on seismic bearing capacity factors for shallow foundations near slopes

Shangchuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study uses upper-bound kinematic limit analysis to determine the mechanism of failure and bearing capacity factors for shallow foundations near slopes subject to seismic action. The seismic bearing capacity factors are influenced by transitions in failure mechanism, soil properties, and finite configurations of slope and footing geometry, demonstrating significant non-linearity.

Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Rigid Footing on Two-Layered Soils of Sand-Clay

Quang N. Pham et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ultimate bearing capacity of a rigid footing on the free surface of sand overlying clay using rigid-plastic finite-element method. Interface elements and new constitutive equations were introduced to evaluate the interaction between the footing and the soil, and design charts and new bearing capacity formulas were developed. The study found that the failure mode of two-layered soils changes from general shear mode to punching shear mode with a reduction in the shear strength of the clay layer.
