DEM investigation of the effect of hydrate morphology on the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sands

Yanlu Ding et al.

Summary: Understanding the engineering properties of hydrate-bearing sands (HBS) is crucial for assessing the safety of natural gas hydrate exploitation. However, precise testing of HBS specimens with different hydrate morphologies has been difficult due to the challenges in controlling hydrate formation in the laboratory. In this study, the discrete element method (DEM) is employed to create HBS models with various hydrate morphologies, and biaxial compression tests are simulated to evaluate their mechanical properties. The numerical results demonstrate that the shear strength and secant modulus of HBS are affected by hydrate morphology and saturation, and relationships between micro mechanical analyses and macro mechanical properties are established. These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanical responses of HBS with complex hydrate morphologies.

Deformation mechanisms of coexistence type methane hydrate-bearing sands: A particulate-scale investigation

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of cementing ratios on the deformation and failure mechanisms of MH-bearing sands. Using a new numerical sample preparation technique and conducting biaxial compression tests via the discrete element method, the study finds that increasing cementing ratios lead to a higher inclination and thinner thickness of shear bands. The formation of shear bands is directly influenced by the breakage events of bonded contacts and the evolution of contact fabric. The presence of bonded clusters contributes to the stability of column-like structures and the formation of large void spaces.

Microscopic mechanism analysis of influence of high effective confining pressure on mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments

Jialin Xu et al.

Summary: It was discovered in tests that the increase in effective confining pressure could have a great impact on the mechanical behavior of hydrate-bearing sediment, which was not only decreased the internal friction angle and dilatancy, but also enhanced cohesion and strength. Significant crushing of the hydrate-host sand was founded after shearing under high pressure. In this study, a discrete element method (DEM) model considering the effects of particle breakage and hydrate repolymerization was proposed, and a series of numerical triaxial tests were performed to shed light on the mechanism of mechanical properties evolution observed in the physical tests. The numerical results revealed that the breakage of host particles was a leading cause of the decrease in the internal friction angle and transformation from shear dilation to contraction. As the hydrate saturation, axial strain, and effective confining pressure increased, the force chain network of the model became denser and the force magnitude on the chains became increasingly uniform, which leads to the increase in model strength; the number and force of bonded contact also increased gradually, resulting in increased cohesion on the macro scale.

Mechanical Behavior of Methane-Hydrate-Bearing Sand with Nonlinear Constitutive Model

Haiyan Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of methane-hydrate-bearing sands (MHBS). Experimental and numerical tests are conducted to analyze the effects of various factors, such as hydrate saturation, confining stress, heterogeneity, and grading properties. The results show that the compressive strength of the sand increases with confining stress and hydrate saturation. The stress-strain curve becomes smoother at higher hydrate saturation. Heterogeneous distribution of hydrates leads to local instability, and grading properties have little influence on the mechanical behavior of the sand. MHBS exhibits brittle or plastic mechanical behavior in undrained tests.
