Thermoresponsive polyelectrolyte hydrogels, derived from tetran- alkylphosphonium 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate-type ionic liquid monomers, show reversible water uptake/release, in which the gels absorb/desorb water for at least ten cycles via a lower critical solution temperature-type phase transition.
