Study of two free-falling spheres interaction by coupled SPH-DEM method

Li Zou et al.

Summary: In this paper, the settlement process of two side-by-side free-falling spheres in a water tank was numerically studied using the coupled SPH-DEM method. The model accuracy was validated and different parameters were investigated to understand the motion patterns and flow characteristics of the spheres. The results provide insights into the settlement process and influencing factors of spheres in a water tank.

Numerical simulations of sloshing waves in vertically excited square tank by improved MPS method

Guan-yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper numerically simulates the phenomenon of Faraday wave in a pure heave excited square tank using the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The effects of surface tension and a new boundary condition are considered in the simulation. The study observes the evolution, non-linearity, and breaking of the Faraday wave, and conducts parameter analysis to understand the mechanism of resonance response.

MPS-based axisymmetric particle method for bubble rising with density and pressure discontinuity

Zidi Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach for numerical simulation of gas bubble rising in liquid. The incompressible and Weakly Compressible Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) methods are used to model the liquid and gas phases separately, with the liquid-gas interface explicitly represented. The method is validated through numerical tests and experiments, demonstrating its accuracy, efficiency, and stability.

Multi-phase moving particle semi-implicit method for violent sloshing flows

Xiao Wen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the necessity of multi-phase simulations for representing violently sloshing liquid through a comparative analysis between single-phase and multi-phase MPS methods. The results show that as the intensity of sloshing increases, the accuracy of single-phase simulation significantly decreases, whereas the multi-phase simulation agrees well with experimental data.

Experimental and numerical study of slamming problem for a trimaran hull

Jinxin Wu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the slamming loads on a trimaran hull structure through experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The impact pressure, vertical acceleration, and flow field motion were monitored in experiments, and a modified MPS method was used for simulation. Comparisons between experimental results and numerical simulations were conducted to validate the model accuracy, and extreme values and distributions of slamming loads on the hull were analyzed using high-speed camera images and numerical simulations.

Numerical simulations of multi-layer-liquid sloshing by multiphase MPS method

Xiao Wen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a multiphase moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method is developed by introducing various multiphase models. The method is applied to numerical simulations of liquid sloshing and the results are validated with good agreement. The study shows that phase interfaces may undergo complex deformations while the free surface remains relatively calm.

Oil Spill Modeling: A Critical Review on Current Trends, Perspectives, and Challenges

Panagiota Keramea et al.

Summary: Several oil spill simulation models are used globally to predict the evolution of oil slicks. This study reviewed eighteen state-of-the-art models and found that many do not account for key physical processes and lack timely response capabilities. Areas for improvement include more comprehensive parameterization of oil dissolution, biodegradation, entrainment, and size distribution prediction.
