Efficient gradient enhancements for plasticity with ductile damage in the logarithmic strain space

Johannes Friedlein et al.

Summary: This study contrasts different gradient-enhancements for plasticity-damage material models in the logarithmic strain space and compares them to reference models based on multiplicative plasticity. The compared models include plasticity-gradient-damage, where the gradient-enhancement is applied on the local damage variable, and gradient-plasticity-damage with a gradient-enhanced plastic hardening variable. Numerical localisation analyses confirm that gradient-plasticity is able to regularise plastic and ductile damage localisation simultaneously, which is particularly advantageous for logarithmic strain space plasticity-damage. Despite being numerically demanding, two numerical examples demonstrate good robustness and mesh objectivity in the softening regime. Additionally, the internal length for plasticity can adjust the damage zone width, similar to gradient-damage, but ensures that damage occurs exclusively inside the plastic zone.

Gradient-extended damage analysis with reduced integration-based solid-shells at large deformations

Oliver Barfusz et al.

Summary: This study extends a recently proposed non-local damage analysis method to the regime of geometrically non-linear shells. By incorporating a gradient-extended two-surface damage-plasticity model for finite strains into a low-order solid-shell finite element formulation, which is based on reduced integration with hourglass stabilization, the most relevant locking pathologies caused by linear interpolation of the displacement field are eliminated. The framework utilizes a polynomial approximation and provides computationally highly efficient hourglass stabilization for accurately predicting damage processes in both geometrically non-linear thin and thick-walled structures.

Micromorphic crystal plasticity approach to damage regularization and size effects in martensitic steels

Matti Lindroos et al.

Summary: The reduced micromorphic model introduces an additional microvariable to regulate localized inelastic deformation mechanisms, formulates damage as a strain-like variable, and investigates strategies for treating slip and damage as non-local variables. The model accounts for size-effects and predicts finite width damage localization bands, introducing extra-hardening near grain boundaries and slip localization zones. Two approaches for dealing with damage localization are identified: indirect method based on controlling slip bands width and direct method in which damage flow is regularized together with or separately from plastic slip. Application to a real martensitic steel microstructure is explored.

A two-surface gradient-extended anisotropic damage model using a second order damage tensor coupled to additive plasticity in the logarithmic strain space

Hagen Holthusen et al.

Summary: The objective of this paper is to develop a thermodynamically consistent coupled damage-plasticity model that accounts for damage anisotropy at large deformations. The model treats plasticity and damage as separate dissipative mechanisms and is suitable for both brittle and ductile materials. The logarithmic strain measures and the additive split are used in the deformation analysis, while a novel gradient extension is introduced to address mesh sensitivity in material softening.

On the effect of strain and triaxiality on void evolution in a heterogeneous microstructure-A statistical and single void study of damage in DP800 steel

Carl F. Kusche et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of the globally applied stress state on damage evolution in mechanically heterogeneous microstructures, such as dual-phase steels. Plastic strain was found to be the major factor influencing the nucleation of new voids, while triaxiality was correlated with the median void size. Void coalescence leading to failure was related to local instabilities in the form of shear band formation and was indirectly determined by the global stress state.
